Opening ceremony to take place on the 20th May 2017!

Birkenshaw Bluedogs Rugby League Club was formed back in 1978 and celebrates its 40th year in 2019!

Based just off junction 26 of the M62 motorway, the club has enjoyed a rich history over its relatively short life.

At a junior level, the club has sides at u7s, right the way through to u13s, with the flag ship of the club being the open age side which presently plays in the winter Pennine League.

The club is thriving right now, with playing numbers at their highest on record and which is largely down to the hard work and determination from the likes of club stalwarts Andrew Redmond, Adam Lincoln and Morton Robinson who if it wasn’t for these people, then there wouldn’t be a club today.

With over 100 children now activity involved with rugby league and 12 level 2 qualified coaches all delivering quality coaching, the club has ensured it’s invested in its coaching capabilities. Nothing demonstrates this better than the club’s coaching pathway programme which has seen 8 of the 12 coaches having gone through this programme so the future is very exciting!

The club is always on the lookout for new volunteers, coaches and players so anyone interested, then please make contact with Club Chairman Andrew Redmond at andyredmond174@hotmail.com or mobile number: 07876 692318.

Unfortunately and we suspect not uncommon for other rugby league clubs as well, the facilities available to us were in a very poor state, run down and in need of major investment just to make them safe.

Another all too common problem was funding for improvements for grassroots sports in this country was extremely limited, so we had to come up with something different in order to ensure its future sustainability but what?

Back in 2012 and as result of the lack of facilities and funding, the club decided to join forces with another sporting club who also used the facilities at the site where both clubs played, forming a community association initially to secure funding to improve the facilities and to build some new changing rooms - When people said it wasn’t going to be easy, they really weren’t joking!

We’re pleased to say 4 years on and a community trust with a board of 6 trustees now formed made up from people from the clubs involved and interested individuals from the wider local community, a limited company by guarantee with charitable status, over £350,000 worth of funding secured and with a new changing room opening date confirmed for the 20th May 2017, phase 1 of the project is nearing completion!

We can’t change the weather but we also have plans for phase 2 of our project which will involve improving the facilities again so practice and games are less susceptible to the conditions so anyone interested in becoming involved with our project, then please contact East Bierley Community Sports Association’s secretary Simon Armitage on mobile number 07966 322491 or via enquiries@EBCSA.co.uk

For the open ceremony for the new changing rooms, we have major plans so watch this space for more information or contact event organiser Edward Filtness on 07966 577968 or via enquiries@EBCSA.co.uk

We feel our story is a real one of success in times where running a rugby league club and providing quality facilities has never been harder so please come along and help us celebrate our opening day or if you liked to talk to us some more about our story, then please get in touch!
