On Sunday 17th October 2010 Bishop Auckland Rugby Club's Tag played in the Sunderland Tag festival.
It was a bright and sunny autumnal day which only added to the boy’s building desire to get going, some were almost bursting with excitement – eager to get on with the rugby.
With a large number of teams from all over the region, there was a little delay while the registration was taking place, but once this necessary task was completed, the games started to come thick and fast.
The game format was roughly 5 players per team (or equal numbers if less), we had travelled with 10 plus players and because of this fact, it was decided that the focus would be on the boys enjoying themselves rather than the trying to win the games, and with this in mind every boy who had made the journey was going to get same amount of time on the pitch. So a rolling substitute policy was applied, which was largely successful. It was wonderful to see the boys grasp this idea and there was no bickering at all about being replaced mid game.
The team played some fantastic rugby winning a number of games and progressing to the cup semi final. It was neck and neck after the final whistle, so both sets of coaches agreed a sudden death try – winner takes all – the result could have gone either way but eventually West Hartlepool won and went on to the final against Durham City. In the disappointment of defeat the boys showed the opposition great respect by congratulating them on the win.
A special mention and thank you must go to all the parents who supported their little ones through out the long day.
The players conducted themselves extremely well and are a credit not only to the club but to their parents and guardians alike. They made the three coaches very proud in every aspect of their conduct and behaviour, this just goes to shown that the future Bishop Auckland Rugby Club has wonderful foundations in this set of players.
Our next fixture is also at Sunderland Rugby Club, Sunday 24th October 2010, please meet at the Bishop Auckland Rugby Club for 9am. If you decide to go direct please let, Kevin, Jane or Paul know.
See you on Sunday
