Bishop Cleeve Reserves travelled to Southmead for their first match of the season, which was in the Les James League Cup.

This showed in Richard Gill’s men early on as Southmead took full advantage of Cleeve’s misfortune. When a defensive mix up presented Southmead with a golden opportunity to take the lead from the spot. The penalty gave Eric Edge Cleeve’s young goal keeper no chance. This helped to kick start Cleeve who started to control the game with some neat passing and incisive movement and Brad Barnard was unlucky not to score,

Half Time 1 v 0

After the break Cleeve enjoyed prolonged pressure in the Final third but the breakthrough only came after Richard Gill brought on 16 year old Substitute Lewis Hitchman and 18 year old Elliott Marlow on 66 mins. Hitchman scored within a minute of his introduction when he headed home from Matt Magee’s in swinging corner.

On 77 mins Cleeve took the lead when some good work by Giles Elliott set up Elliott Marlow who hit a half volley into the left hand corner.

Then on 84 mins Cleeve sealed the win when Matt Magee scored the goal of the game when he collected the ball from a Luke Skears cross field ball which drop within inches of Magee. Who with some neat footwork went past four Southmead players and finished in
style.
