And we're back!
Tarleton tamed after Manc abomination
Cup match day again and so we look down from the sunny upland slopes of victory today, after the skidmarks in the snow that was last week's performance against Manchester.
17 boys came out to play today, with Iceman Josh holding the waterbottles and his broken hand on the sidelines, against a host side missing a coach and a few due to injury. Yours truly got the refs assignment, Blackburn won the toss and with the sun beating down on a decent rink, we were off. Tobi introduced himself to Tarleton with another great try, slaloming through their D within a minute of kick off. Jacob was next to score, a strong run through the midfield taking out a couple of defenders before dropping over the line. Tobi showed some great speed, skating past a few to score down the right wing and within the first 5 minutes Johnny managed to grab his first, snowballing over with a hard run, past a skeleton defence.
At this point the game went rather dead from a Blackburn perspective, almost as if the lads thought it was all overski. Sunday is never like that, and many a good team starts slow. From the restart an attempt to slowly pass along a static line was easily picked off by Ellis the Tarleton captain, and all our lads could do was watch the back of his shirt which was black run the ball home. Tarleton started to play a much better game after this their 3 or 4 big players much more confident and looking for work, while Burn were lacking in attacking speed, skating around looking for gaps that Tarleton were closing well. Tobi started stopped the rot with another well managed attack, and Jacob followed him over the line shortly after to bring the half time score to 5 - 25.
At half time, the coaching moguls were keen to emphasise this apparent lack of go forward momentum, and the need to pressure their ruck. It wasn't long before the lads were hard at it as a series of penalties and scrums took up to the Burn 5 metre line, where the forward goons traded hits and slapshots for a good 5 minutes before the boys in Black finally got over the line. Tarleton's smiles didn't last long however as from the restart Tobi again made them pay with a delicious cut back against the defensive line for his 4th. Lewis was next up to score with a little ice pick and go to bring the cup part of the proceedings to a close at 10-40. We played on however to see the brilliant Tarleton full back squeeze past Theo's despairing tackle, though Theo got his own back a few minutes later with an even finer effort down the wing - 50 metre sprint that ended with the Tarleton 15 grasping big air. James Toms topped of a fine game with a mazy run of his own to dot down another, and I think Johnny may have added to his tally, bring the final tally to 11 tries for us and 3 to them. Despite the score, congratulations to Tarleton who never gave up, despite having a skeleton team, a couple of their lads nursing colds and flu but battle on regardless.
Just to check if anyone reads this stuff - how many winter/ Olympic references did you get, I could make a Korea out of this!
