Boars Bring out the Best

Touring team a good test.

This weekends triangular tournament with Bromsgrove Boars and Ormskirk turned into a two way tussle as Ormskirk were a no show. Bromsgrove were on tour from their base in the sunny west midlands and Ramsgreave was resplendent in the sunshine. The Boars were up for action, having played Fleetwood and Preston the day before, and had a squad of 18 youngsters to pick from. Burn had 14 turn up and as the U8s lost their fixture, they joined us to make up a round robin 6 a side tourney. Logistically this failed with the 8's playing the same team twice, but how and ever, a good session of competitive rugby was had by all, just what we needed in the run up to our tournaments and after a week off for Easter.

As ever, our teams played splendidly, with both our a and B teams taking on the well coached and managed Boars in both attack and defence without too much bother.

For the a's, Captain Connie, sparkled and danced her way through and around the Boars defence, giving this referee no reason to leave the halfway line - feed the Connie -she will score. She was joined in this with equally brilliant running and weaving from Harry, Tom and Ivan, who were pretty much unstoppable. Calum, James and Johnathon were always on hand to offer support, making our attack amongst the most potent in the county/country/universe. However, we all know its defence that wins games and tourneys' and here's were the rustiness and carelessness crept in. Once we woke up and maybe had a wee flea in the ear about daydreaming, our tackling was immense, but at the start, we were grabbing tags, then holding on to them congratulating ourselves rather than giving them back and tackling again, we were chasing the ball rather than keeping to our positions, and we forgot about our extra player, mister and miss sideline, and how to encourage our opposition to go and meet them.

And so to the Brilliant B's - so called because the Bromsgrove manager made a bit point of letting me know that he thought they were our A's - this little group of stars actually played out of their skins and were only guilty of not following the system when muggins here came over to "help", started rearranging their defence and missed the referee blowing the whistle to let Bromsgrove tear through them. Tries all over the shop, lots of great support, and terrific performances from William, Matthew and Alex who i still perceive as our newbies, but who have a good few games under their belt now, while the experienced steady hands of Ted, Dil, Oscar and Alex J, were their to steady the ship and steer clear of icebergs.

Trafford MV next week, with a few final tweaks and twists to sort out ahead of Rochdale the week after, yours truly has one heck of a selection problem! Wish me luck!!
