One of their best performances of the season to date saw the Club come from behind on three occasions at Sedgley Park on Saturday to achieve their first victory away from Rectory Field since mid-October.
Richard Windsor and Dave Allen both crossed the try-line in the first period, but each score was answered by Sedge who held a narrow 15-13 lead at the break.
Blackheath dominated the third quarter and were rewarded through further tries from James Stephenson and Mike Canty, only for the Tigers’ big pack to hit back once more to be leading going into the closing stages.
However, despite the loss of Tom Stradwick to a dislocated shoulder, Allen was driven over for his 16th try of the season to give the visitors parity with just five minutes remaining. And then, in the final play of the match, a devastating move off the base of a scrum saw Stephenson fly down the left touch-line for a 37-30 win.
‘I’m overjoyed with the performance,’ said Yusuf Ibrahim. ‘As I maintained after the Stourbridge victory, you get out what you put in, and the boys have worked really hard since the Cinderford game.’
‘There were 20 good performances on Saturday and the only downside was the injury to Tom who’d been playing really well. He’ll be out for four to six weeks.’
‘We’ve got a week off now, at least in match terms,’ he continued. ‘But the work ethic is firmly entrenched, so we’ll be training as normal, both this week and next, to be ready for the visit of Blaydon in ten days’ time.’
Blackheath v Blaydon is a 3.00 pm kick-off at Rectory Field on Saturday 11th February.
Well done boys. A great result!!!
