The Beavers Express gathers pace as the Saints suffer their first defeat in 12 games, the Rattler reports & Barry Corkindale captures the shots...

Team: Ryan Hemmings, Karl Mills, Kris Hart (C), James Basey-Fisher, Darren Cox, Greg Murphy, Jamie Furlong, Duncan Whitlam, Ben Morgan, Chris Holmes, Danny McKail. Subs: Tom Notley, Stuart Rushbrook & Simon Blowers.

The Saints arrived at the Rec on an unbeaten run of 11 games and started by playing the ball around nicely with good width, Aaron Kay (Bullet) hanging back wide on the right to deliver telling crosses punched away by Hemmings. Luke Tuttle was able to turn and fire the ball over after Bullet had put the ball out wide to Lee Robins. The Saints were closing down well in midfield and keeping the Beavers’ defence busy. It was no surprise when St Johns went ahead after 16 minutes, Tuttle put the ball over the top and Lloyd Greening burst through the Beavers’ defence to strike the ball home. Blofield responded and Darren Cox’s free kick skimmed off Danny McKail’s head and wide of the post, then were fortunate to escape when Bullet put Greening through but, with Hemmings beaten, the ball came back off the post into Hemming’s grateful hands. Hemmings made a good save to deny Greening again after James Basey-Fisher’s error then Tuttle’s shot went just over under challenge from Karl Mills. Ben Morgan’s corner kick was headed on by James B-F but Karl Mills’ overhead kick was blocked, then Dave Matthews took the ball off Mills’ head at the far post for another corner which Greg Murphy headed wide. After 34 minutes Dan Cushing tried to let the ball run out for a goal kick, Chris Holmes won the ball for Ben Morgan and he cut inside before placing the ball superbly into the far corner of the net. Referee Mark Timmins allowed play to go on after Morgan was brought down by Matty Racher, Danny McKail’s wicked cross was spilled by keeper Deane Smith before James B-F’s shot was blocked. Half Time 1-1.

The second half started with Chris Holmes getting on the end of Greg Murphy’s cross to beat keeper Smith but his goal was adjudged offside. Dave Matthews found Tuttle in the area who went past B-F, but Kris Hart threw himself at Bullet’s shot to deflect the ball out. Ben Morgan was unlucky not to score after Jamie Furlong’s ball over the top, beating two defenders before his shot was deflected just over. In a let-off for Blofield after 20 minutes, Tuttle’s free kick just outside the box grazed the post. The next 3 minutes saw the Beavers blow away the Saints. First Danny Mac won a free kick on the right and Holmes’ free kick was put away by Karl Mills from close range. One minute later Duncan Whitlam won the ball for Macca to outpace Danny Nelson down the right wing and Holmes finished superbly for 3-1. What followed can only be described as bizarre. With Blofield appealing for foul play, St Johns crossed from the right and an unchallenged Matty Racher headed the ball past Hemmings. As referee Timmins called the captains over, the linesman raised her flag resulting in Lloyd Greening being given a straight red for violent conduct. After 78 minutes, Hart brilliantly denied Racher and started the move which led to the Beavers’ fourth goal. Whitlam passed the ball to Holmes in space on the left, Holmes returned the ball to Whitlam and he was brought crashing down long after he had crossed the ball for McKail. With colleague Tom watching on, Ben Morgan duly sent Smith the wrong way from the spot. At the end Matty Racher walked off before being shown the red card after bringing Morgan down with a horrendous tackle, and Holmes’ free kick was pushed round the post by Smith.

This was an exciting encounter with the Saints on top first half, the Beavers coming back like an express train second half. It was an expensive outing for the Saints, hardly living up to their name with 4 yellow and 2 red cards which could be costly later on. Jamie Furlong and Karl Mills had fine games whilst Ben Morgan and Chris Holmes’ quality shone through. Next Saturday the Beavers are away at Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves 2pm kick-off.

Interesting to read the St John's match report too:-

St Johns travelled to Yarmouth Road, Blofield, where revenge was very much on the menu for the home side after the rare 0-5 score line dealt to them by the Saints in the Senior Cup earlier in the season.

Four changes to the starting line-up saw returns for Tuttle and Robins while Nelson and Smith started due to illness to Vincent and Lucas, Mallett, Halliday and Kelly were working and with Carr having family commitments the dressing room was a bit bare.

However the Saints started well and despite a couple of corners and free-kicks for the home side it appeared that Tuttle and Kay were pulling the strings with Matthews and Greening fully tuned in on the same wave-length, Tuttle was fed by Kay on 9 minutes and his turn and volley was superb but just over the top.
With 17 gone the game got it's first goal, Greening won the ball well in the middle of the park, slipped the ball to Tuttle who held it up superbly before returning a perfect pass to Greening who only needed one touch to smash the ball past the home keeper into the top left corner. 0-1.

26 on the clock and Greening should have made it 2, he made a decent run and was found by Kay with precision, he beat the keeper only to see his shot rebound kindly off the post and straight into the keeper's hands.

Just after the half hour Tuttle talked himself into the referee's notebook and from that point the Saints discipline went downhill, along with their chances of getting anything out of the fixture.

10 minutes before the break the Home side were level, Cushing tried to run the ball out for a goal kick, got his angles wrong and the ball was nicked by Holmes, he fed Morgan who's deflected shot found the corner of the net past a helpless Smith. 1-1.

3 minutes later and Racher followed Tuttle into the book when he lunged in near the corner flag and caught Morgan leaving him in a heap on the ground.
The final action of the half saw Bussens complete a hat-trick of bookings for the visitors as he dived in just on the side of the area but Smith was fouled from the resulting free-kick.
1-1 Half time.

A very good half for the Saints who were disappointed not to have been winning.
The start of the second half was very cagey and you got the feeling that the first goal was going to be crucial, the Saints thought they had scored when Tuttle laid the ball back to Kay who shot deflected only inches wide of the left hand post.

2 minutes later Tuttle was set away by Matthews and his left footed shot only just cleared the crossbar, only 5 minutes later Tuttle tested the left post with a free-kick which had the keeper rooted to the spot. With just over 20 minutes to play the home side took the lead, Racher fouled Mackail which led to the home sides players, supporters and management calling for him to be sent off, luckily for Racher the referee sent him away on his last warning.
Unluckily for the Saints they didn't defend the set piece well at all, Holmes crossing for Mills to finish unchallenged. 2-1.

Only 2 minutes later it was 3-1, Mackail beat Nelson down the right, and hit his shot was only parried by Smith straight at Holmes, it just hit him and went into the net, for all St Johns good work it was in vein and it now looked an uphill task to get anything from the game. 3-1.

The next 5 minutes can only be described as the most bizarre passage I have ever seen on a football pitch and certainly at this level, St Johns won the ball, retained possession well and finally got the ball out to Kay, his cross was perfect for Racher who headed into the bottom right corner, everybody thought it was 3-2, the ball was back on the centre spot and then eventually (a full 90 seconds after the alleged incident) the assistant on the far side was flagging, the referee went over, disallowed the goal and subsequently sent off Greening, the main question on everyone’s lips? why didn't she flag when she saw the incident? Uncharacteristically Saints full back Robins was going crazy as he believed that the official didn't actually see the incident and had been told by a Blofield supporter along with being encouraged by full back Harte that the goal shouldn't stand, Robins found himself in the book for his outburst and the game restarted, still 3-1 and the Saints down to 10.

With 15 minutes remaining any very slim hopes the Saints had of anything from the game were ended, Fewtrell stupidly upended Whitlam for a blatant penalty and Morgan added the 4th, Fewtrell was subsequently yellow carded for the tackle, 4-1.

There was just about time for Racher to join Greening in the early bath as he lunged in, again on Morgan and although he got a foot to the ball you haven't been able to tackle like that since Graeme Souness and Peter Reid retired, a despondent 9 men carried on the last 10 minutes and they deserve full credit for their efforts.
4-1 Full time.

Having had time for the game to settle in, there were a lot of positives from the visitors, some nice football, creating chances at will, but the key word for the day was discipline, both Greening and Racher's actions cost the Saints any chance that they may have had in the game and if the general attitude towards discipline in the team doesn't improve then we are going nowhere.

Man of the match for the Saints was Kay, he had been sub-standard since the Christmas but he was back to his best, he had the Blofield back 4 in tatters first half and was passing through them like statues, had the finishing been better this could have been a completely different story.
