Blyth Buccaneers 40 v 3 Ashington III

Buccs too strong for Ashington. Match report by Mel Cole.

The two local rivals, squared up to each other on a frosty seagull park. Ashington had the better of the early exchanges, and scored first through a penalty, however it didn’t take long for the early tension to boil over, and a flurry of punches, saw Blyth full back Rob Coulson in the sin bin for 10 minutes. The home team responded positively at this point, and urged on by Captain Mick Bath, started to put their game together. Dave Charlton rounded off a fine move to score in the corner, closely followed by a try from promising ex-colt Matt Burman. The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, with plenty of niggle, Blyth finished stronger with a try for prop forward Ian Atkinson. The second half saw Blyth finally take a firm grip on the game, with Captain Mick Bath leading the way with a fine try. A powerful drive from the Bucks forwards saw Ian Hudson muscle his way over and score. Ashington rallied and put the home team under some pressure as the light faded, but Blyth forced their way back into the game with a try from strong running winger Ian McKenzie , who was unlucky to have two further efforts ruled out for infringements. The scoring was rounded off with 4 conversions from Coulson and one from Mal Broom. The score line reflects the control the Buccaneers had on the game, and although Ashington scored first, very rarely threatened to score again, Highlight for the Blyth team was prop forward Mac Morris played for the full game, avoiding the sin bin on this occasion. Once again several ex-colts, Burman, Cole Charlton, Callum Smith and Ryan Lewis were able to turn in very good performances, supported by the experienced veterans.
