Bognor RFC vs Ventnor RFC
Saturday 17th March 2018
By Thomas James

Bognor hosted bottom of the table warriors Ventnor on a snowy Saturday at Hampshire Avenue in what was the home side’s first fixture in 3 weeks.

The home side started off brightly with Pat Gibbs running in a comfortable score on the left wing after delicate hands from George Castleton and Joshua Riggall. 7-0 Hornibrook conversion.

Next up on the score sheet was artic lorry Chris Webb, the young accountant making easy work of a carry through the midfield and sorting over the white stuff. 14-0 Horns.

Sam Newcombe then struck with intent after a lovely bout of forward play from skipper Lee Balchin and hooker Riley Chute. The speedy outside centre using his athleticism well to barge over from tight. 19-0.

Joshua Burgess was frequently getting his hands on the ball and was next to score after a gorgeous move linking Jack Hornibrook, Darren Bidwell and Adam Knight. The forwards and scrum half offloading well in the wide channel before the big centre finished under the posts. 26-0 Horns.

James Barlow then made a lovely hit on the touch line and forced the Ventnor winger out to touch. Bognor capitalised on the lineout opportunity and played quickly, Hornibrook finding the ball again out wide after swift hands from Paddy Burnett and Danny Greenslade, placing the ball over for another home score in the snow. 33-0 Bognor.

Greenslade then bagged a try of his own after leaping 16ft in the air like a salmon, the speedy winger catching the ball and finishing impressively. 40-0.

Hornibrook wanted a piece of the action and used great footwork to open up some space in the Ventnor defence and samba’d his way over the white wash. 45-0.

One again front row forward Webb dominated in the loose and used his quick feet to take the outside line and beat the opposing winger for pace. Try time, 52-0.

Half time beckoned and Castleton was replaced with Alex the grabber Bosley while Greenslade came off inured for young starlet Jeremy Newton Young.

Instantaneously Bosley made an impact with some great carrying in the central regions supported by his captain and workhorse Lee Balchin. The two flankers linking up like they had played together for years. Riley and Bidwell continued to dominate the ruck area with Riggall pulling strings out wide despite the horrendous conditions in Oslo.

Burgess then ran his infamous Barnham to Bognor crash line and made mince meat of the away sides defence and finished with ease. 59-0.

Hornibrook despite having an awesome game in the snow then butchered a 4 on no one out wide and knocked the ball on over the line. Fortunately for him the forwards backed him and themselves and turned the scrum over after immense power in the engine room from Barlow and great scrummaging technique by Webb. Bosley backed up by his partner Knight finished over the line. 64-0.

Newcombe continued to look dangerous out wide and pounced on a loose offload from partner Burgess to finish in style in the corner. 71-0.

Balchin then carried hard through the middle from the kick off return and fed try hungry Gibbs for his second. Easy run in for the paceman. 76-0.

George Castleton said at the end of the match:

“We must play these last games of the season with passion and pride to honour the badge and our captain Lee Balchin”
