The Mikes 0-0 Coventry Sphinx
Boldmere St Michaels FC Match Report by Mark .N. Jackson
The Mikes came into this game looking to maintain their impressive recent run of form and were looking to do the double over Sphinx who they had beaten four-nil at Sphinx Drive earlier in the season.
On a cold afternoon Coventry had the first chance of the game a long shot from Ashley Jackson being held by keeper Lewis Fenney. Boldmere’s first chance of the game came in the fifth minute when a shot from Andy Lewis went just wide of the Sphinx goal. Sphinx then created another opportunity when a shot from Harry White was held by Lewis Fenney.
The visitors then started to get their game together a free kick found Kiam Galdings in the penalty area who headed just wide of the target and then just before half time a Sphinx cross was hastily cleared over the bar by a Mikes defender as both sides went in level at the break with everything still to play for.
Boldmere went looking for a goal after the break a couple of efforts from Simeon Maye being held by Carl O’Neill in the Sphinx goal. Boldmere had another chance in the fiftieth minute when a Simeon Maye free kick was played to Richard Gregory who headed past the post. A minute later Richard Gregory found Nathan Demonte who fired over the bar. Sphinx then went down the other end and an effort from Rickie Cutting shot over the bar.
Coventry Sphinx nearly took the lead in the seventy-second minute when a cross shot from Rickie Cutting hit the woodwork and the rebound fell to Adam Bilic who shot narrowly wide of the post.
Boldmere’s Richard Gregory then had another opportunity when he flicked the ball over his head and shot just past the post.
Coventry Sphinx then had a corner which fell to Louis Guest who shot just past the target.
Sphinx had two chances to take the points late on firstly a shot in the penalty area was blocked by mikes defender Peter Gould and then by keeper Lewis Fenney and then a free kick fell to a Sphinx player in the penalty area whose shot was only denied by the legs of Mikes keeper Lewis Fenney as Boldmere hung on for a well earned point against a stubborn Sphinx side who will cause plenty of problems for the other Alliance title challengers on this performance whilst The Mikes have an interesting away trip to Westfields next Saturday.
