Bold Miners - Report
Date: Saturday 16th June 2012 - Kick Off: 14:30
North West Men's League - Division 2
| Bold Miners | 42 | vs | 6 | Chorley Panthers |
Bold continue unbeaten start to the season.
Bold Miners 42 - Chorley Panthers 6
Bold extended their 100% statrt to the league season with this convincing win, however it was played in typical summer conditions as most of the game was played in torrential rain.
The Miners did not make the best of starts as they were guilty of indiscipline in the early stages and gifted the visitors possession and field position but they held strong as they kept the big Panthers pack at bay. As was expected in the conditions there were a lot of errors from both sides as the ball became slippy and these knock ons and the resulting scrums punctuated the game and really prevnted either side from gettting the upper hand in the opening exchanges. Bold started to complete their sets and the forwards started to get on top led by props Liam Crehan and Stu Cranny, and a burst of 3 quick tries put the Miners in full control of the match. The first came when a quick play the ball around the half way line allowed hooker Kelvin Walkden to spot some broken defence and he shot through a gap and beat the covering defence for one of his trademark tries which was converted by full back Ian Webster. Walkden turned to creator for the second try when he jumped out of dummy half to the blind side and he found centre Gaz Langley who hit the ball at pace and burst through 2 defenders to score in the corner and Ian Webster added a fine touchline conversion, the score went out to 18 when Kelvin Walkden added his second in similar style to his first try and despite the attentions of 2 or 3 defenders he got the ball down at the side of the posts to give Webster an easy chance to add his 3rd conversion.
To their credit Chorley's heads did not go down and they enjoyed their best attacking period of the half and when Bold again gave away a couple of penalties they spent some time camped in Bolds 20. They threw everything at the Miners defence but could not breach it as they scrambled and got numbers into the tackle and as the panthers attacked to the left some excellent defence from Josh Comber and Mark Shaw kept them out as they tried to crash over. After soaking up this pressure Bold went on the attack again and on the stroke of half time they added a 4th try when standoff Andy Dobson put in a pinpoint kick to the in goal and of the chasing pack Ian Webster was first to it to claim the try and then add the conversion to leave the score at 24-0 at the interval.
The second half was much like the first as the rain ensued and despite the best efforts of the Chorley side Bold were first on the score sheet, this time as Andy Dobson ran the ball to the right and took the line on and he found Ian Webster linking in from fullback and he went in for his second try to which he added his 5th succesful conversion. The Miners continued to build pressure and when a neat offload from Andrew O'Dowd found Stu Cranny running into a gap who scored slid over without a hand laid on him and Webster kept up his perfect kicking performance. Chorley finally got on the score sheet as Bold pushed to try and add to their tally but a deflected pass was intercepted by the Panthers centre who ran over unchallenged as Bold were pushing up in attack. The disappointment of conceding spurred Bold back into life and some good defence pinned the visitors back and as they gained some good field position it allowed Kelvin Walkden to spy the chance to take on the defence and score his third in typical fashion, this time Gaz Langley added the conversion. Chorley spent the last minutes of the game throwing everything at Bold, but tough scrambling and goalline defence held them out to leave the final score at 42-6
Walkden was named the Grundy Excavation man of the match.
Despite the heavy looking scoreline Chorley deserve credit for their performance as they competed for the full 80 minutes and showed great attitude and effort throughout the game.
