Running out of steam
Under 15s fight back crushed in second half
For the second season running, Bournville were drawn against a very strong Whitchurch RFC team in the North Midlands Cup. However, the team has improved considerably since this time last season and made the long journey with hope of at least giving them a good game. Old failings re-emerged in the opening period, with missed tackles and poor rucking resulting in 2 tries for Whitchurch in the first 10 minutes. However the team regrouped, and finally started playing some rugby. When Nahum Huggins
is given the ball in space he takes some stopping, and so it proved as he scored a 10 minute hat-trick of tries to put Bournville 19-12 up with 30 seconds left in the half. It was then that a rush of blood to the head led to Bournville attempting to run a penalty from inside their own half, and Whitchurch were able to turn it over and score under the posts.
It was to prove a turning point, as the hosts turned the screw in the second half and Bournville had nothing left in the tank. 6 unanswered tries perhaps didn't reflect how tight the game was, but Whitchurch ran out deserved winners. The lads can learn a lot in defeat, not least the importance of game management.
Thanks to all the parents who made the long journey to support. Roll on the plate competition...
