U14s in the Cup
Match report by our NEW U14s correspondent Oli Hemming.
After beating Bridgnorth 19-12 in the cup earlier on in the season, Bournville travelled to Old Luctonians Rugby Club near Ludlow. Luctonians have a strong, powerful and unrelenting pack so it was always going to be a tough game where Bournville needed to make the most of the possession that they had and had to defend strongly.
Right from the kick off, Luctonians dominated the possession and spent most of the first half with the ball. Bournville defended their try line inside their own 22, refusing to give in and Luctonians couldn’t find a way through. When Bournville managed to get the ball, they knew they had to get it out wide or play for territory and clear it as there was no way of getting through the forwards. After each clearance, Luctonians found themselves back on the ball slowly making their way towards the Bournville try line. But Bournville’s amazing defensive effort didn’t allow Luctonians to get through with huge tackles made by Dylan Price and Ollie Pawley. Towards the end of the half, Bournville were back on the ball and working their way up the pitch, thanks to great turnovers made by Paul Ring. The ball was chipped over the defence and reclaimed by Bournville. After making a few metres with the ball being taken in by Paul Ring, Bournville managed to win a penalty for offside. They decided to catch the opposition off guard with a quick tap and go and they did exactly that: The ball was given to Dylan Price at pace who ran straight for the line from just outside the 22. After beating a few defenders, he ran for the corner and scored the first try of the match with just a few minutes before half time. The conversion was missed but at half time Bournville were 5-0 up after a great defensive shift by all players.
The second half was more of the same with Luctonians still dominating possession and territory, but they still couldn’t find a way through the strong Bournville defence. Bournville made a few breaks, with Kian Fatemifar playing a key role, but they were dealt with by the solid Luctonians and Bournville were unable to add to their tally. Luctonians also broke through the Bournville defensive line numerous times but great cover tackles prevented them from scoring. With just minutes to go Bournville had the possession and under constant pressure from the Luctonians defence they had to clear the ball and play for the territory. After a very close two halves Bournville were starting to tire and after collecting the kick, the Luctonians player passed the ball out to the winger who found himself with an open right wing. A tired Bournville defence was unable to chase him down and make a cover tackle. The winger made no mistake of placing the ball under the posts, giving Old Luctonians a simple kick to convert. With under five minutes to go Bournville had to score, but a disciplined Luctonians side didn’t give anything away and kept possession right until the final whistle.
The game finished Luctonians 7-5 Bournville. A disappointing result but one to definitely be proud of!
