FINAL TEN MINUTE SHOCKER AS BURTON ROMP HOME
BURTON 43 BOURNVILLE 18
Week two of the league season saw Bournville travel to Burton which has not been a happy hunting ground in the recent past. The team selected showed a few changes from the previous week. Prop Steve Blackburn replaced the injured Paul Coles, and Ash Knight came in at hooker with Alex Willis reverting to the bench. Tom Holliday and Captain Rob Griffin made up the row with Steve Handy moving to the bench. James Hussey made his debut at 12 which sent Greg Moore to the bench. There was one late change with winger Paul Sumner's flight being delayed from a work commitment although he did make the ground, so travelling reserve Chris Humphrey took his place.
The opening exchanges were played out within the 22's with both sets of forwards testing each other out at close quarters and when the ball was ran wide, the backs on both sides cancelled each other out. Burton forced two early penalties from breakdown offences which were very kickable but they were pulled wide. After 10 minutes, Bourns entered the opposition 22 with menace with forwards and backs combining. Quick ball allowed the alert scrum half Sam Brown to feign a pass and slip through the defence for a try under the posts converted by Warner. From the kick off, Bourns felt aggrieved when the official failed to spot the ball receiver taken out in the air and from the resulting ruck penalised the away side. However it came to nought and Warner kicked a penalty after 15 minutes to make it 10 -0 to the good.
Burton then began to get some steam up and had the lions share of possession with their outside centre proving elusive. A penalty was conceded in the Bourns 22 for a deliberate knock on. A quick tap saw the home forwards drive to the line and score a converted try. Burton transgressed from the kick off and Warner slotted another penalty. As half-time approached Bourns lead was gobbled up when after several phases, a home flanker crashed over, so a one point lead separated the sides with the home side leading 14-13.
Both sides tries to keep the ball moving. Bourns incurred the wrath of the referee with 3 penalties for chopsy which halted their good play. One try a piece was scored in the next 30 minutes of play. Firstly the Burton centre created havoc and an offload to the winger saw a home score with the kick missed. Bourns scored from a line out when hooker Ash Knight broke off and sprinted 22 meters to score in the corner. So 10 minutes to go, Burton 1 point ahead at 19-18. It's fair to say the Bournville wheel then fell off, as all of a sudden gaps appeared, Burton's ball seemed easier to win and more space and time seem afforded to the Burton backs. Burton scored 4 tries and converted 2 of them scoring 24 unanswered points taking the game away running out 43-18 winners.
Bourns will reflect on that last 10 minutes and ensure that doesn't happen again. Something to fix...
Star man was Ash Knight who had several runs beyond the gain line capping it off with a try but a disappointing conclusion to the game from the effort the team put into the match. Burton will feature at the business end of this league.
Bourns have a chance to bounce back next week when Crewe and Nantwich visit the university for the first time.
