Simply The Best
BRFC under 12s best ever Bees Festival Performance
Another Sunday, another festival...
But this was no ordinary mini rugby festival. The Birmingham Bees had assembled some of the best teams from Birmingham/Worcestershire to provide a massive test for the Under 12s at the end of their best season ever. Games against Droitwich, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Sutton, Bees, and Stourbridge would really test how far this new squad of players had come over the course of the year. However, after a good showing in Coventry last week, and a squad of 16, the lads were confident as they strode onto the first team pitch for a 6 game marathon...
Drotiwich 3 BRFC 2
Stourbridge 6 BRFC 1
The first two games (against the top teams in the group as it turned out) ended in defeat, but not without giving our top class opposition a massive scare. BRFC may look like Dad's army at times, but they produced some excellent rugby, coming back from 3-0 down to only lose 3-2 to Droitwich with a stirring second half performance, and leading Stourbridge 1-0 until nearly half time. There were some impressive performances across the team, but it was particularly noticable how much the tackling has improved over the past year.
Bromsgrove 4 BRFC 4
No one could ever remember our squad beating Bromsgrove, and we have taken some batterings from them over the years. Therefore it was very pleasing to see the lads throw themselves into this game, scoring four brilliant tries in the first half which they dominated. They couldn't quite hold on, allowing Bromsgrove to equalise with the last touch of the game, but you could see the confidence surging back into the Chocolate Men...
Bees 2 BRFC 11
Sutton 1 BRFC 4
Kidderminster 0 BRFC 6
And boy did it surge back...
Our last three games were scheduled back to back, and there was concern that a squad depleted by injury (Elliott injuring his neck in an outstanding tackling display against Bromsgrove) might struggle. No chance. The forwards tore into Bees, with Sam E and Riyaan scoring at will, and everyone putting in 100% across the pitch. Sutton were much depleted in numbers themselves, but BRFC dismissed a really talented team with some lovely passing and running moves, and Kidderminster were blown away in the final game.
An overall position of 3rd out of 7 was really brilliant, and gives us lots to build on next year.
This has been the year when this team has truly become a rugby team. We were still reliant on big performances from key players (Riyaan, Sam E and Joe scored 80% of the tries between them), but there were massive performances from every other member of the squad across the season.
Arvind, Elliott, Dan and Sam R (average weight 3 stone dripping wet) proved that with great technique you can tackle anything, and led the team by example.
Most Improved Player of the Season Ben has all the tricks in the book at scrum-half, and Joe perfected his 'flanker who thinks he is back' routine to win the Player of the Season.
Riyaan and Sam E were unstoppable at times with ball in hand, and there were few teams that could cope with their pace and power - both could have huge futures in the game if they continue to work on basic skills.
Newcomers Jim, Marios, Alex, Ali and Arvind showed great enthusiasm for the game, and we look forward to watching them continue to develop next season.
Club stalwarts Tom and Sam P did a lot of very hard work in the unglamorous engine room of the pack, and did it with a smile on their faces. They were joined by Archie, Robbie, Arjun and Hugo as ever-presents, forming the lifeblood of the team.
The goals for next season are to play some more expansive rugby, spinning the ball out to the wings more, and hitting those rucks harder!!
This team has been a pleasure to work with week in week out, and the coaching team are delighted and proud of their progress. We would like to thank them all, as well as their parents for their dedication to rugby whatever the weather. Special thanks go to Suus for excellent admin and emailing skills, and to Bob 'Director of Catering' Hadley for his lovely baps.
Roll on 2016-17!
