Bright, cold, muddy... victorious
Birmingham Bees were our hosts this Sunday. It’s always a close call between Moseley and Bees as to which club has the coldest, most windswept ground.
Given that in previous years it has been so cold at Bees that one of the coaches spilled their pint because of excessive shivering and the fact that this Sunday we had 4 seasons in one day I think Bees get the nod. Surprisingly all the #committed coaches were remarkably sprightly given their long journey to Twickenham and back the day before.
Bees were able to field a single team so Bournville 1s started off whilst the 2s played 5-a-side against each other.
The 1s consisted of Finlay, Michael, Thomas U, Matt, Olly M, Joel, Rory C, Jacob, Callum and Freddie. They were ably coached by Ian, James and Richard U.
A quick try in the first play set the scene for an emphatic Bournville victory with every member of the team contributing (and nearly every player scoring a try). Despite the cold weather and very soft ground the handling and running game was played very well with good supporting running and excellent use of the last minute off load after committing the opposing player to the tackle. Loose play was excellent as always although there was less need for it than usual because the running game was so good. An excellent team effort.
The 2s then took to the increasingly muddy field determined to back up the win and did so most impressively. There was again some strong running (occasionally a little too solo inspired rather than passing the ball through the hands) and we completely dominated in the rucks. It was a good performance though with the Bees Coaches later commenting positively on the quality of our handling. Some of our own notoriously grumpy coaches did however notice that we do perhaps need to work on passing left to right as we seem much more comfortable passing the other way.
Our thanks to Bees for their hospitality and for getting us out on the pitch!
