Positive Start for U8's at Moseley Festival.
First Festival of the New Season with New Rules.
Two teams were entered at the Moseley Festival. A strong squad of 20 players made the short journey to that enigmatic location of Billesley Common!
The new season has new rules to be adopted; 7 tags and turnover, bigger pitches, knock-ons are now turnover ball plus you don't have to be on your feet to score a try. After 4 training sessions, the whole U8's squad has stepped into these new variations with great enthusiasm!
The festival renewed old rivalries with games against Moseley, Lichfield, Camphill and Bromsgrove plus 2 new teams of Old Leamintonians and Birmingham Solihull Bees.
The larger pitches allowed both our teams to show strong, attacking running rugby and the standard of passing was second to none. The 7 tags and turnover brought our defensive skills to the fore and several times we gained turnover ball from pressurised tagging.
Some defensive lapses did let in easy scores for our opponents. We will be working on our defence in training, especially stopping the “dancing” defensive stance and the “I will play full back” position. We need to go forward in defence as when we do, we tag and get turnover ball.
There were some good performances and it was great from the coach’s perspective, to see all the players showing grit and determination working together as a team. This has given us a positive platform for the rest of the season.
We had a great day at Moseley. The players seemed to be having fun and thank you to all the supporters for cheering on the teams and keeping them fed and watered in between games!
Thanks to Moseley for organising a good festival.
