Another Saturday - another...WIN! For the 4th XV!
Building from the promising second half performance, the previous week, an upbeat 4ths took to an almost tropical Ponderosa Pitch. With a few changes from last week’s team - most noticeably Bruce coming out of retirement - after a whole week on the side lines - give or take a summer!
The early exchanges were tight with both teams looking to break through. Bury then pressed down the right applying a lot of pressure which for 15 minutes was soaked up. After some concerted pressure Bury broke through wide on the right for an unconverted try.
This spurred Bowdon on from the re-start - with some direct running and great play from all - Jim Miller popped up to dive over on the left for the equalising score!
The game was an even contest with this good attacking and defensive play from both teams. Bury’s bigger forwards making the most of the lineouts and Bowdon arguably having the upper hand in the scrums. In open play all things were equal - with bury having the first half advantage of the ponderosa slope! With 30 minutes gone Bury pressurised Bowdon down the right - some heroic tackling from Pat Casson
couldn’t keep them at bay, Bury diving over for another unconverted try! Bowdon were forced into a change with Pat - Off to A&E with a dislocated shoulder, some re-jigging of the team took place with Ricky (Rooney) Stevens coming on. We all wish Pat a quick recovery!
Again from the restart Bowdon came back up the park - from a lineout a great sniping run from Balders was stopped short - a well timed pop to Jim Miller set him off on a fantastic run from a fair distance out and over for his second this time between the sticks! Anthony Grosvenor
adding the conversion to put Bowdon 2 points up.
Back came Bury and with only a couple of minutes to go they went over on the left to give then a 3 point lead. The see-saw game then came back in Bowdon’s favour with a great try from Tom Salmon running it in after beating a couple of tackles from 40 yards.
Half Time Bowdon 17: 15 Bury
The second half saw Bowdon playing most of the game in the Bury end of the pitch. Pete Baldwin
scoring a great individual try between the posts with Grosvenor again converting giving Bowdon a 9 point lead. This was cut back to 2wo points when Bury scored midway through the half - some lack lustre tackling allowing a score between the posts.
From the kick Bowdon again showed some flashes of brilliance with Gareth Morgan
putting Kenny Davies through on Bury’s 22 to jog in another converted try.
The final score of the game came from a great run down the Bowdon left from Andy Gill scoring in the corner after bouncing a couple of tackles during a 35yard dash.
The game continued to be played in great spirits by both teams with the final whistle signalling the end to a memorable win for the team and more importantly a great game of rugby enjoyed by all who took part!
Areas for improvement - 10 & 5 meters for our rugby league converts! And Tom – no quick lineouts this is 4th team rugby!
Highlights of the afternoon - Rooney Stevens 50 yard punt up the park! The ref asking someone to gag the rugby league players! And Kenny and Toms jog round the pitch.
Man of the match – Pete Baldwin
for his marshalling of the forwards sniping runs and great link play with the backs!
Dick of the day - Anthony Grosvenor
for not using the bushes like everyone else and relieving himself during the pre match talk with the ref! I’m sure it was hitting Bruce’s legs!
Next match Saturday 15th Away against Ashton under Lyne
