One last drubbing

by Neale Hutchinson

Brackley’s league programme came to a close on Saturday with one of the heaviest defeats of the season.

Only the two promoted sides Northampton BBOB and Biggleswade had handed out greater punishment, although Bedford Queens came close in similar circumstances three weeks previously. With relegation a certainty, Brackley had struggled to assemble a full strength team for the trip to Corby and in a match played almost entirely in their own half, went down to Stewarts & Lloyds by eight tries, seven conversions and a penalty goal without reply. It was the seventh time in 22 league matches that Brackley had failed to get on the scoreboard.

Stewarts & Lloyds were in firm control from the first whistle. Establishing field position with long kicks to the corners, the home side seized every opportunity to cross the line during a first half in which they scored at a rate exceeding a point a minute. So successful were the try scorers at touching down near the posts that Stewarts & Lloyds’ kicker landed five out of six conversions in addition to an early penalty goal.

Ahead 43-0 at the interval, Stewarts & Lloyds eased up in the second half, running through various plays involving forwards and backs as thoughts began to turn towards next season’s campaign. The home side also came up against sterner resistance from Brackley who, after a searching team talk at halftime, had managed to tighten up their defensive effort and restore some pride to their performance. Consequently just two converted tries were added in the second period, giving Stewarts & Lloyds a fifth place finish in the league and Brackley much to ponder as they head to Midlands 4 East (South).
