Bracknell's 2nd XV were also in action on Sunday in the Berkshire 'B' League against a fast improving Abbeyensians side. In atrocious conditions Bracknell attacked from the first whistle and soon began to dominate their opposition and after an intense few minutes the hosts buckled under the pressure and the first points were in Bracknell's favour. A period of attack was absorbed by the Bracknell defence and the players resisted all attempts by the hosts to cross the line and gradually pushed the Abbeyensians forwards back up the pitch. Gradually the strength of this Bracknell side began to show and with some superb support play the tries began to flow and in such testing conditions this was testamount to the hard work the team has put in all year with their basic skills. With confidence flowing the forwards and backs cut through the home team's defence almost at will and a further 7 tries were scored. The final score of 44-0 was an excellent result in wet and windy conditions and secured Bracknell U14's 2nd's well deserved runners up place in the 'B' league which included a number of other clubs 1st XV's.
Their final position was an improvement on last seasons league campaign where they scored 153 points and conceded 233 compared to this seasons campaign where they scored 148 and only conceded 48! Coach Guy Elliott said,
'The 2nd XV who have been a superb credit to Bracknell RFC this season finished off their league fixtures with a emphatic victory over Abbeyensians and this has been a fantastic season for the B team and seeing the team spirit develop over the course of the season has been one of the highlight for the coaches. Only losing twice in the whole season and that was to a strong Newbury team the other to Weybridge Vandals both who only have A teams.
The defence in the league was brilliant and we showed real commitment in fact the only B team to cross our try line was Windsor for a single try. We took maximum bonus points from out 4 games against B team opposition with a average of 35 points a game.
Full credit to the team on what has been a fantastic season and a special thanks to Brooke and Oli for their leadership on the field'.
Match Report (Simon Leyland)
After a long season, the u14’s went to Abbey for their final league fixture of the season. A win would not only secure runners up spot in the BYL but ensure that their proud unbeaten record (against all B teams) would be maintained.
Abbeyensians have enjoyed a good first season and were looking to upset the visitors in a match played in possibly the worst ‘end of season’ weather that anyone can remember!
From the kick off, the Bracknell forwards dominated proceedings and a couple of early tries in the first ten minutes gave the considerable travelling support reasons to ignore the rain dripping down their backs. The home team just couldn’t get into the Bracknell half and a half time score of 25-0 was just reward for all the hard work put in by the Bracknell pack.
Even a number of substitutions and tactical changes didn’t manage to upset the rhythm of the visitors and a final score of 44-0 clinched the runners up spot and maintained the 100% season.
Mention should be made of a fine performance by the referee, who allowed the occasional knock on and fumble in the bitingly cold conditions. Abbeyensians had their best period of play at the end of the match, when all was lost and if it wasn’t for resolute defending would have had at least some points on the board.
So, with only the tour to South Wales to come the B team should be immensely proud of their achievements and with the A team winning their league, this age group must surely be seen as the best in the county.
Thanks must also go to all the coaches who, over the years, will undoubtedly have questioned their own sanity as they have watched the boys go through some pretty indifferent rugby. This season has been different, one that all involved with the B team are very proud of.
