Walking football is a relatively new concept. It is still football as we know it but played at a slower pace making it more accessible to those individuals who may not have played for years or perhaps have an injury or less mobility. It provides a new opportunity for those with a desire to be active again to participate in a sport they love, and be part of a team with like minded people. Rules include a below head height restriction with no heading allowed in order to avoid any possible head injuries.
Our club, Bracknell Town Walking Football Club was formed in September 2014 and we are loosely affiliated to Bracknell Town FC.
We play every Wednesday morning at Bracknell Leisure Centre, Bagshot Road, RG12 9SE on the 4G astro pitch, starting at 10.30am. Depending on the numbers that turn up we are usually split into 6 or 8 teams of about 6-a-side so that we can hold 3 or 4 small sided matches lasting 15 minutes at the same time. This includes a slow paced game for those who are less mobile or are recovering from injuries. The pitches are booked for 1 1/2 hours, although some people tend to leave after playing 3 games during the first hour. Players are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes early to join in the organised warm up session. We have recently acquired the services of two retired referees to make sure fair play is observed, especially regarding running.
We also play every Friday evening at Bracknell Town FC stadium, Larges Lane, Bracknell, Berkshire. RG12 9AN on the 4G astro pitch, starting at 7.00pm. This is usually a single match ranging from 5-a-side to 10-a-side depending upon the numbers, but if numbers increase we may run 2 smaller sides matches at the same time. Since the pitch is booked for an hour, we normally play 3 fifteen minute games with a short break between each game. Players are encouraged to arrive early to ensure that they are properly warmed up before the games start.
The minimum age limit is 50 and new members will be made most welcome. To date 54 players have tried walking football with us and 31 have signed up as members.
On Wednesday mornings and Friday evenings we play amongst ourselves. Since the popularity of the game has increased we are now playing regularly in 2 leagues run by the Surrey FA and the Berks & Bucks FA. We are also receiving invitations to send teams to various tournaments throughout the area, some of which we have won.
