Late try from Carl Walker seals cup win for Salem

Bradford Salem clinched a dramatic last-gasp 31-25 win against a dogged Wath to progress to the second round of the Yorkshire Shield.

A late Carl Walker try sealed victory with the last play of the game.

Led by man of the match Andy Robinson, Salem finally gained superiority, having struggled to contain Wath's direct forward play.

Things started well for the Shay Laners, when debutant Ryan Smith sliced through the Wath defence to post the opening score. Belcher added the extras and then posted a penalty to open up a ten-point lead.

Sniping Wath half-back Joe Bartlett was a thorn in Salem's side all afternoon and engineered Wath's comeback, through a series of driving mauls and blind side attacks.

The South Yorkshire side opened up a commanding lead going into the last quarter, before Salem hit back through tries from Robinson, a second from Smith before Walker's dramatic clincher.

Danny Belcher was on target with the boot, slotting four conversions and a penalty.

Salem showed improved discipline with a lower than normal penalty count, although they were down to 14 men for 20 minutes, as John Morrell and Rhys Green were dispatched to the sin bin for 10 minutes apiece.
