It was with great sadness that we learnt that Angus Rae, one of our oldest surviving playing members, had passed away last Thursday 8th January 2015.

Born James Angus Rae in Girlington in 1922 he was educated at Thornton Grammar School and saw active service during the 2nd World War. On returning to Bradford after the war he joined Bradford Salem and was regular member of the 1st team front-row for 10 years. He subsequently served on the committee for many years holding several positions including secretary and chairman.

Like many Bradfordians of his era Angus forged a career in the wool trade, where he worked for over 35 years. However he maintained a strong interest in rugby and, after moving to Cottingley and then Eldwick, he followed his sons Anthony Peter & Paul who played for Bingley and then Bradford & Bingley. He spent several years on the selection committee at Wagon Lane but returned “home” when Paul moved up to play at Salem in 1984.

He was a regular sight at Shay Lane, both on the touchline and in the clubhouse where he enjoyed his favourite tipple of a whiskey and half a bitter until well into his eighties. His contribution to the club was recognised when he became one of only a handful of honorary life members.

A devoted family man who lost his wife Marjorie (who incidentally served on the inaugural ladies committee at Salem for 20 years) in December 1996, he lived just long enough to meet up with his great-great-grandson, his 17th grandchild.

His funeral is at Nab Wood Crematorium on Monday 19th Jan at 12:40pm. After the service everyone is cordially invited to Bradford Salem clubhouse for refreshments.
