Character, team spirit and togetherness see Shaw home by 2 wickets
After the miserable affair of last weekend's game being rained off, we were itching to play against a formidable Triangle side. Oh wait...it rained all week and most of saturday afternoon!
So we left Shaw in convoy with Mr Bill Plant, Becky's reliable van in which everything possible was thrown in the back and the shangaban of love, to be named the "caravan" of love for this season following at the rear. None of us were particularly optimistic following the monsoon like weather experienced over the week.
Having safely arrived, Wayne and Chimpy overjoyed to have made it in the "caravan" of love without any eventful moments the wait began.
After an hour of light drizzle, the rain thankfully stopped and there was a slight chance of cricket even if the outfield resembled a marsh rather than a cricket field.
I believe we lost the toss and behold to man, we were fielding.
After a few overs of play, the rain began and continued to fall for sometime. Steve Senior looked in good touch. The first wicket fell with Dougall taking a good catch on the boundary of Chimpy's bowling.
As the rain continued to fall, both batsman scored boundaries regularly and the score soon increased.
Change bowlers were used but Triangle continued to attack and the home side very much remained in the ascendancy. The "caravan" came under attack from a few lusty blows but to the great pleasure of everyone, remained in tack.
However, as both Aaron Buckley and Chris Shannon came on for their second spells respectively, the game soon changed.
With the ball starting to wobble, wickets began to tumble after the second wicket partnership of 150 was broken.
Senior made an excellent ton which was followed by his compatriot Chris Silkstone who began the season how he finished last with a quickfire half century.
Aaron and Chimpy continued to dominate as the rain poured, Wayne doing well to stop a four as he took a tumble having lost his footing. Having had a pep talk from Dean, Shaw looked a different outfit with the ball and in the field and other than the 1 dropped catch and the odd misfield, it was a good first half from Shaw. Triangle's middle and lower order very much failed too add any substantial runs. They finished with 218, but more importantly, with 10 over spare.
With 54 overs and 218 runs needed, it was in our hands.
After a solid start, with Dougall and Mick Turner opening the batting. Mick fell with Moore coming in. Both batsman looked to punish the bad ball and keep the scoreboard ticking over as the pair looked to establish a partnership.
With Dougy just looking settled, he was bowled playing a very extravagant shot. Wayne was next in. Boundaries came regularly and the score soon approached 100/2.
Both batsman looked in touch, however, Rob Cole was to be the middle order's foe as he bowled well, dismissing Wayne (20) and Chimpy.
Lee took Karl Fletcher to the cleaners and smashed him to all parts and added a very important 29 runs to the score. Thankfully he was hitting towards the scorebox end otherwise the "caravan" could of been in trouble.
Moore departed for 48 and after a few other wickets fell. The Skipper and Aaron both played sensible innings to see us home with a few overs to spare. Aaron winning the game with a delightful six which easily cleared the ropes and the "caravan".
All in all, a good collective team performance from Shaw in difficult conditions. Everyone played their part which was the most satisfying of all. Day's such as Saturday require a team ethic, graft and a team spirit which we have in an abundance. These attributes will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season, along with the "caravan" of love! Which we can say no other team has.
Bring on Booth and a game of.........water polo! Get your trunks out!!
