Season 2012 Preview

Following a vastly improved season in 2011, Breaston Cricket Club finally halted the run of 3 consecutive relegations.

In fact, for the majority of the first half of the season Breaston held onto second place in the league and harboured genuine hopes of promotion. Sadly a dip in form and the loss of key players resulted in Breaston finishing the season in 6th position and only having midtable obscurity to show for their efforts.

The Sunday side also started the season in fine form, losing just one of their first 7 fixtures - a not unexpected defeat to local rivals Sandiacre. Some epic matches, notably away at Thrumpton, Braunstone and Stanton by Dale and a free scoring home match against Parkhead proved to be the highlights of a far improved season.

Breaston can rightly go into the 2012 season with high hopes of a successful year, despite the reported loss of last season's top run scorer Lee Sutton. With a stronger batting line up than recent times, often with players all the way down to number 11 capable of making solid contributions and a bowling line up boasting Beadling, Coles, Colley and Verma to name a few, the club can rightly fancy improving on last season's final position.

Breaston's younger players will now have an extra year's experience, the likes of Tim Colley, Jonathan and Matthew Beadling will continue to be nurtured in the Sunday side and attempt to break through into the league XI. Tim showing signs of developing into an excellent batsmen and the young Beadling's developing strong bowling actions and a taste for some good old fashioned Beadling slogging.

The season opens with the traditional "Casualty Derby" as Breaston take on Sutton on the Hill cricket club in a friendly on April 15th. Last season nasty injuries to Breaston's Richard Beadling - struck in the face by the ball in his bowling follow through, and Brian Land of Sutton who split his brow open top edging an Ashley Beadling delivery overshadowed a winning draw for Breaston in which Luke Collen took 4 wickets on his debut.

Breaston then travel to Thrumpton, the scene of a final over victory in 2011, before the league program begins at Lambley II on April 28th, a ground infamous for it's unusual steep drop on one side of the outfield. The club will also renew acquaintances with Madni, Kimberley IV, Flintham II and Lowdham II. Whilst welcoming promoted sides Eastwood III, Kinoulton II and Division P champions Poplars along with relegated Radcliffe on Trent IV.

With a side that has seemingly turned the corner and with more confidence than in past seasons Breaston can rightly consider themselves to be strong enough to have a successful 2012.
