Bridgnorth 21 Bournville 14
All Blacks get first win of the season.

After a testing first game away last week against a strong Sheffield side, Bridgnorth we’re back down on a perfect rich green Edgar Davies thanks to our groundsmen Dan Shotton and John Sedgwick.

Bournville has won their first game away at Syston last week and were likely to be a tough test for the All Blacks. With club captain Dan Pumba Griffiths out for a number of weeks with a knee injury, the skippers responsibilities were passed onto the HEAD of Calum Madden.

The game kicked off with the pitch dry but the drizzle started and made handling quick tricky. Bridgnorth has the upper hand on the scrums with Ryan Smeilus, Luis Evitt and Jonah Boyce a dominant force. Unfortunately a clearance kick from Bridgnorth got charged down which led to a quick 7 points conceded.

Bridgnorth fought back quickly with hard running by twin towers Calum Madden, Jake Goulson lead to fast ball and Loti crashing over on debut. The conversion was neatly converted by Afe.

The home team continued their strong running but a lose ball at the bottom of a ruck led to a turnover which was kicked long over into the home 22 but the ball bounced unkindly and straight into Bournville arms to crash over for another converted try.

A penalty from Afe brought the scores back to 10-14 at Half Time.

Bridgnorth knew that if they cut out the few mistakes and lose penalties then the game would be won when playing back home towards town.

A fast start to the second period led to more hard carrying lines from Conor Nicholls and Charley Wright followed by quick wide passed down the line with Bishop and Williams which got the North up to the try line. A penalty came and quick tap from Bladen ended up being centre-meters short and but another penalty came and was nudged over by Afe which brought the scores to within 1 point.

Whilst the home team still made small errors and conceding penalties, the away team mounted a lot of pressure but the defence was resolute, particularly from Seb Brooks. The game started to open up and some long kicks led to spaces for Burgess to exploit, bursting down the pitch, linking up with Afe who clipped over for Lowe to touch down. Conversion pulled left.

The game was evenly contested with Bournville having the majority of possession but couldn’t break down the defence. Another long kick gave Burgess another 40 meters stepping run only to be tackled by an injured player who was then yellow carded. The penalty was converted to extend the lead to 7 points.

A yellow card to Evitts led to a tense final 15 minutes but Bridgnorth’s hard hitting Cave, Boyce and Loti kept the away team out until the final whittle went.

A first win of the season from Bridgnorth and a first win for new coach Gareth Harris was pleasing. This leads on to next Saturdays away trip to Syston which is always a tough fixture.
