Bridgnorth Men’s First XI 3-1 Edgbaston
Bridgnorth First XI continued their excellent recent run of form as they produced a battling display to defeat a hard working Edgbaston to avenge an away defeat earlier in the year.
Once again, the game started at a frenetic pace, but often lacked any consistent quality due to this. Both teams were looking to stamp their authority on the game, but it was the home side that gained the early advantage thanks to the returning Danny Wright, who deflected in at the back post after superb work from Matt Ealey on the right. Bridgnorth then made it 2-0 shortly after this thanks once again to Wright, who again deflected in from close range after Matt Martin had failed to convert from Joe Toulson’s excellent cross. However, Wright’s day soon took a turn for the worse as he was shown a yellow card for the last ten minutes of the first half, but despite being a man down, the home side managed to maintain their 2 goal cushion at the break.
The second half saw Edgbaston pile the pressure onto the home side’s goal, but every attack was thwarted by a resolute Bridgnorth defence and the on-form Darren Dixon. In truth, Bridgnorth should have capitalised on some fine counter-attacks, but failed to convert leaving the game on a knife edge until ten minutes remaining. However, Dan Evans made the game safe, with a superb individual goal, and one he will struggle to better. He picked the ball up on the half way line, and brushed aside three Edgbaston defenders as he powered into the “D” to then thunder a reverse stick shot into the bottom corner to make the game safe at 3-0. Edgbaston did pick up a late consolation to make it 3-1 at the final whistle.
This was a superb win for the First XI, but they know they must continue this good form with tomorrow’s trip to high flying Coventry and North Warwick.
