Bridgnorth moved ten points clear at the top of Shropshire league with a resounding win against second-placed Wem/Market Drayton.
Following last weekend’s convincing result against bottom of the table Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth were keen to prove a point against their nearest challengers and duly handed out the same treatment. Lucy Cottam led the way with a skilful volley before Kate Everitt scored from the edge of the D with a beautifully executed push. Wem were frequently struggling to clear their lines and in the resulting goalmouth scrambles Lauren Cash and Amelia West both took advantage – Cash sliding in to give the ball that final kick over the line and West finishing with a touch so subtle it was barely noticeable but got the job done.
The second spell provided no respite for Wem as an early foot on the line gave Kate Bailey chance to drill home from the penalty spot. Everitt added her second with a first-time sweep before setting up Bailey for a neatly finished corner. If anything, Bridgnorth should have scored more, with Hannah Jennings and Nola Hamilton both denied by the visiting keeper in the final quarter. However, Jasmine Spooner celebrated her first goal in Bridgnorth colours with a precision finish from the tightest of angles wide on the left, taking the score to 8-0 and leaving skipper Mel Hill with few complaints:
“Sometimes this season we’ve been guilty of not following through once we have a lead, so it was good to continue scoring through the second half. It was a much better performance than last time we played Wem, so I’m really proud of the team.”
