Relegation showdown results in Brigg victory

Brigg 2nds secure a vital three points away at Leeds Adel Carnegie 3rd XI.

Brigg arrived in plenty of time for the match, possible as an overestimate in the journey time by the 2nd XI captain Dan Garfoot following last week's debacle. Knowing that a win here would almost certainly ensure their survival the Brigg team were nervously optimistic about their chances.

The game was to be played at Leeds polytechnic on their new blue artifical pitch. Although the pitch itself was remarkably similar in feel to our home pitch at Brumby Hall, the blue surface did seem to cause several players to lose their first touch early in the game. In fact neither side were able to play any fluid hockey for the first period of the game.

Leeds took the lead when a breakdown allowed them to attack along the left flank and for their forward to drive into the 'D' along the backline. Then remarkably the Leeds player managed to flick the ball past Phil Young's ear from a narrow angle and they were in the lead.

Brigg could do little to assert themselves in the game with a number of chance falling flat as the nerves and the pitch caused a number of breakdowns in possession. Zach Meadows impressed on the left of midfield and several times used his pace and skill to create opportunities but unfortunately these came to naught. Then just before halftime Dave Baggott, utilising the v-drags that have been drilled into the club at training this season, managed to beat his man before driving into the 'D' and unleashing a ferocious shot that cannoned of the post into the top of the net.

Following halftime the Leeds midfield seemed to drift out of position and this allowed Brigg to create more space and dominate possession. Their second goal came from a drive down the right wing by Simon Weightman who crossed to the top of the 'D where Andrew Norris took a quick shot to catch the opposition 'keeper in the process of setting himself and the shot sneaked between his legs to take Brigg into the lead.

Brigg then went further ahead with a penalty corner move. The ball was switched right by Stuart Brumby to Matt Peaker who found that none of the defenders closed him down allowing a calm flick over the 'keeper into the goal.

With the lead secured Brigg 2nds played out the last twenty minutes with a calmness that belied their defensive experiences earlier in the season and with a ten point cushion secured they can begin to look forward to next season in the Division 2.
