Brigg completed their league fixtures for the season with a solid home win against a depleted Market Drayton team, who were unfortunate to lose a player for half of the game because of injury,- with no substitute to replace him. The home team started very brightly with Danny Buttle
working down the left wing to find time and space to send two telling crosses into the goal area for Phil Jackman
. The first was knocked past the upright and the second saved at the expense of a corner kick. Liam Davis crossed this into the crowded goal area for OLLIE FISHER to head into the roof of the net for a third minute lead. The visitors replied with a swift attack to the other end of the pitch but Tom Rogers was caught off side when played clear down the middle. In Brigg's next attack, Mike Smith played the ball forward down the right wing for Steve Owens to strike a shot wide from thirty yards out. Phil Jackman
, Darren Mansaram and Danny Buttle
continued to play neat inter-passing football in the visitors' half and created three more good openings to increase the lead but Tom Rogers always looked lively at the other end and went close to equalising after the Brigg defenders presented him with an opportunity. Brigg scored a second goal after twenty-one minutes when Phil Jackman
played the ball into space for LIAM DAVIS to strike a low shot into the back of the net.The two goal lead gave the home team confidence to continue pushing forward and Danny Buttle
's supply of left wing crosses continued to put the visiting defenders under pressure. Phil Jackman
had two more chances to increase the lead but his first shot lacked power and his second was saved by 'keeper Damien Stevens. Then on the stroke of half time, Market Drayton missed out on an opportunity to reduce the deficit when Matt Johnson got forward into the Brigg penalty area but struck his shot into the side netting from a right wing cross.
The visitors started well in the second half and Craig Ryan's shot went across the face of the Brigg goal. Then Tom Woodhead had to punch the ball clear from a left wing cross. When Brigg responded, Danny Buttle
raced clear before crossing the ball for Chris Dickman but his shot was blocked. Market Drayton were dealt an unfortunate blow when John Littler, recently recovered from injury, broke down in the middle of the pitch and had to be stretchered off the field. With no substitutes available, this was a bitter blow for the Shropshire team, who were reduced to ten men and still a couple of goals behind. However, they continued to play good football with some first touch movements, but were lacking the necessary penetration. Goalkeeper Damien Stevens made an excellent save to deny Darren Mansaram and both Liam Davis and Ollie Fisher had scoring attempts over the bar. Danny Buttle
score a third goal for Brigg after an hour of play when he raced on to a ball played through by Phil Jackman
to drill it into the back of the net.
Brigg had the ball in the net again ten minutes later when Ollie Fisher headed Ryan O'Loughlin's left wing corner kick into the roof of the net but the goal was disallowed because of a push in the penalty area by Darren Mansaram. Brigg looked more than comfortable with their three goal lead against a weakened opposition and missed out on further opportunities but the visitors never gave up and continued to entertain up until the final whistle in a sporting game.
The win lifted Brigg a further place up in the final league table and preparations are now already in hand for next season.
