RETFORD MATCH REPORT
Brigg 1-2 Retford United
In a must win game came out 2nd best in a horrendous display all round. Brigg took the lead on 11 minutes when Jake Thompson
tapped home after a corner was poorly cleared by the Retford defence. Brigg had the best of the first half and went in at half time leading 1-0.
The start of the 2nd half Brigg were put under some pressure and on 49 minutes Retford won a penalty after Jake Thompson
tripped Adam Lee in the box. The former Brigg Town player picked himself up and scored the resulting penalty.
Retford took the lead on 63 minutes when Adam Lee got his second of the game with a easy tap in after Brigg got caught out and lost the ball high up the field.
Retford were reduced too 10 men moments later for a two footed tackle on Scott Matthews. Despite dominating play after that Brigg failed to test the Retford Keeper.
Brigg had a stone wall penalty turned down with the last kick of the game, a long ball into the box found a Retford player who jumped with his hand raised like something out of a basketball match and the ball struck the palm of his hand only for the referee and linesman to look at each other and wave away the penalty claim. Despite protests from Brigg players and even Retford players laughing at the incident the referee said it didn't strike the players hand in one of the worst decisions you will ever see on a football field.
The loss means Brigg are back in the relegation zone and with only 4 games left the chances of staying in the league look slim but as performances over the last few months show Brigg do seem to do better against the top sides in the league.
Changes will be made for next Saturday's game at Nostell as the last two games have been nowhere near good enough even for a Sunday league side.
