Cleethorpes take derby honours
Cleethorpes Town won 4-0 at Brigg Town after an excellent second half performance.
This was a Lincolnshire derby between Brigg and Cleethorpes on a sunny day at The Hawthorns. Cleethorpes ran out 4-0 winners thanks to second half braces from Luke Mascall and Marc Cooper.
Early on Zak Bratten and Marc Cooper came close at either end, before Caine Winfarrah went on a mazy run, only to shoot wide of the right post.
Soon afterwards Luke Anderson raced clear, but was thwarted by a great save from Liam Higton.
Higton then made an even better save to deny Paul Grimes on the stroke of half time.
The opening 45 minutes were evenly contested. However, things went pear shaped for Brigg in the second half.
Luke Mascall broke the deadlock with a neat finish less than 2 minutes after the interval.
Shortly afterwards Cooper rattled the crossbar with a 25-yarder before doubling the lead. The striker latched onto Winfarrah’s through ball and rounded Jody Barford to score.
The third goal came when Cooper finished off a well worked team move.
Just 3 minutes later Mascall bagged his second to put the result beyond doubt.
Brigg never gave up with substitutes Elliot Broughton and Finn Kelly coming close.
Towards the end Broughton nearly scored with a bullet header that struck the bar - it would have been a deserved consolation and summed up Brigg’s luck.
Brigg battled tirelessly and the final score was harsh on them. Cleethorpes, on the other hand, played well and were worthy winners.
Brigg assistant manager Rob Watson wasn’t too pleased with the performance.
“We started well in the first half, but missed chances to take the lead.
“I felt we went in at half time the stronger team. However, we completely switched off coming out for the second half.
“I was disappointed with the game as we are capable of so much better. We need to start defending better and taking chances more clinically.
“Chaz Fisher was our man of the match - he did well playing out of position and won most of his one to one battles. He never gives up either.”
Brigg are next in action on Saturday, April 23, at home to Handsworth Parramore in the league (kick off 3pm).
Brigg (5-3-2): Barford; Smith, Fisher, Hellewell, Thompson, Dennison (M.Parker 68); J.Parker (Broughton 59), Bratten, Bowsley (c) (Kelly 80); Anderson, Grimes.
