Leek Town 1 Brigg Town 1
Gregg Archer, Danny Buttle and Scott Hellewell were unavailable but Paul Grimes returned to the starting line-up and Bruno Holden was on the sub’s bench.
Brigg enjoyed most possession in the first half and should have been able to build a decisive lead yet it was the home team who had the easiest chance of the first forty five minutes.
In the game’s first attack, Ryan Paczkowski slipped the ball inside from the left wing for Paul Grimes to strike a shot over the cross bar.
Three minutes later Brigg were awarded a free kick in a central position just outside the penalty area but goalkeeper Ben Chapman saved from Paul Grimes’ strike.
The home team’s first attack came down their left wing but ended with Rob Zand saving from Lee Morris.
Two free kicks from Josh Davies into the penalty area were comfortably cleared and a third from the left wing was across the face of the goal and out of play at the far side. Elliot Broughton curled another shot past the top angle of the goal as Brigg continued to press in the first quarter of the game. From a left wing throw, Liam Davis won possession to have a strike at goal but Ben Chapman was well positioned again to make the save.
Towards the end of the half, Leek began to create openings and Rob Zand saved Peter Wright’s shot after a right wing break and Lee Morris struck another shot over the cross bar. The best chance fell to Matt Bell, who drove forward to receive a neat back- heel pass from Peter Wright but he pulled his shot wide across the face of the goal.
The second half started in much the same way as the first with Brigg on the offensive and Paul Ashton fired over the bar from twenty-five yards out after good work by Elliot Broughton.
After sixty-two minutes, Brigg were awarded another free kick on the right corner of the penalty area after a handling offence and PAUL GRIMES found the bottom corner of the net to put the team ahead.
Leek immediately substituted, introducing Tim Grice for Peter Wright to spearhead their attack and from then onwards, the home team seized the initiative and took control of the rest of the game. Three minutes after the substitution, Ryan Paczkowski lost control of the ball on the left wing and Leek took advantage to attack the space down their right wing with Tim Grice getting free to send a shot in low across the face of the goal. Rob Zand was down well to save but the ball broke free again for DAN SHELLEY to knock it into the back of the net from six yards out for an equaliser.
Leek continued to push forward and exerted more and more pressure on the Brigg defence, with Tim Grice continuing to be the main threat but Martyn Gee, Mark Dudley and the back four defended well. Rob Zand was outstanding and made a string of fine saves to preserve the point from the game, which keeps the team in mid table.
Next Saturday, Romulus are the visitors to Brigg in a game which should attract a reasonable number of supporters.
