Dan Waring and Sam O’Malley went head-to-head in a quiz about the England national football team.

1) Who was England manager in 1997?

Dan: “Glenn Hoddle.”

Sam: “Terry Venables?”

Answer: Glenn Hoddle.

1-0 to Dan.

2) Which nation was England’s first match against?

Dan: “Hmmm I’m gonna go Scotland (my football knowledge is poor except Chelsea).”

Sam: “Scotland?”

Answer: Scotland.

Both got it right. 2-1.

3) Who is England’s second most capped goalkeeper?

Dan: “I’m thinking either Joe Hart or David Seaman. I think Hart is top so I’ll go with David Seaman.”

Sam: “David Seaman.”

Answer: David Seaman.

Both were right again. 3-2.

4) Which nation did Peter Crouch score a hat-trick against?

Dan: “Oh I know this but I can’t think. San Marino???”

Sam: “If I’m right in saying that was against Jamaica in a friendly?”

Answer: Jamaica.

Sam has equalized. It’s 3-3.

5) In the 1966 World Cup which nation did England defeat in their semi final?

Dan: “That’s Portugal – I know that.”

Sam: “Should really know this but struggling with this one! Going to take a wild guess and say Italy??”

Answer: Portugal.

Half time! Dan leads 4-3 after a good first half.

6) In the 1998 World Cup which nations were in England’s group?

Dan: “No idea. I’ll guess France, Sweden, Uruguay and Wales.”

Sam: “Colombia and Romania but can’t think of last one unfortunately so pass.”

Answer: Romania, Colombia and Tunisia.

Both were wrong on this occasion. Still 4-3.

7) Is Wembley the largest stadium in Europe?

Dan: “Is that a yes or no answer? If so the answer is no it’s not.”

Sam: “Pretty confident in saying that the Camp Nou will be the largest?? So that would be a no.”

Answer: No.

No mistakes this time. 5-4.

8) What were five stadiums used at Euro 96?

Dan: “Hmm obviously Wembley, Old Trafford, Anfield, St James’ Park (all big teams then). The last one will be a guess of probably Leeds ground (Elland Road)."

Sam: “Five guesses but going to say old Wembley, Maine Road (Man City), Highbury (Arsenal), Old Trafford, Anfield.”

Answer: Any five out of Wembley, Old Trafford, Anfield, Villa Park, Elland Road, Hillsborough, City Ground and St. James’ Park.

6-4 to Dan and he can’t lose now.

9) Who scored for England in their 5-1 win against Germany?

Dan: “Oh bloody hell I don’t know! I think Owen got a hat-trick in that. I’ll guess Gerrard and Terry for the other two.”

Sam: “Owen hat-trick, Gerrard and Heskey. What a game!!”

Answer: Michael Owen (3), Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey.

6-5.

10) A player once scored five goals on his England debut – true or false?

Dan: “No idea but I’ll guess at true.”

Sam: “Going to say false on that one.”

Answer: True.

Full time! Sam did okay, but Dan guessed well to win 7-5.
