Rangers sneak victory in a nail biter

Rangers travelled to Wakefield to take on vastly improved side since they first played each other back on a balmy summer’s day in September.

Rangers welcomed back one or two players from injury but this offset with the loss of Alex Muff and Jamie Barraclough due to work commitments.

Rangers began the brightest and had soon crossed the line. A set move from the scrum saw full back Mark Horne feed winger Ben Collins who crashed over out wide. Neil Walton nailed the touch line conversion, nil - 6. Sharlston hit back following a knock on from a high kick by full back Horne. The ball was fed out to the Sharlston centre who powered his way over, conversion attempt missed, 4 – 6. Rangers finished the second half much the stronger. Andrew Houlihan scored for his second game running when he scored from close range, Karl Frankland converted, 4 -12. Russ Young sent out a looping pass to centre Reece Spurr who showed good footwork to evade the would be tacklers and touchdown out wide, the angle to cute for Frankland to convert. 4 – 16 at half time.

With loss of injuries to Karl Frankland, Matty Turner and the influential Andrew Segear Rangers were on the back foot. Sharlston threw everything they had at Rangers and fatigue began to set in with the Rangers players. Sharlston besieged there left hand side and pulled the game to within 6 points. With some ten minutes left the big number 10 crashed over under the posts and the scores were level at 16 all. With only two minutes remaining Rangers had moved up field, the ball was then passed to Ross Young who’s attempted drop goal hit the inside of the post and sneaked over. Cue high fives all round. Thankfully the referees final whilst was not long in waiting and Rangers need only 1 point from the last 2 games to achieve promotion.

Best for Rangers were Reece ‘Grizzly Adams’ Spurr, Scott Bradley and Russ Young.

Next weekend Rangers first team have no fixture which will give some time for a much needed break and recovery.
