Wyke 12 – 44 Brighouse Rangers
Promotion secured with demolition of Rivals
Rangers made the short journey to near rivals Wyke knowing that a point would secure promotion. Despite Wyke struggling in the lower half of the league Rangers know that Wyke, who are coached by former Brighouse player, coach & chairman, usually raise there game for this fixture. Wyke have in fact inflicted Rangers only home defeat this season, in the Pennine cup.
Rangers were determined to start the game the strongest and take it to the Wyke forwards. After a fast first ten minutes Rangers began to gain a strangle hold of the game. Andrew Sagear scored the first try out wide with a trademark burst to the line. Karl Frankland’s conversion attempt narrowly missing the corner flag. Next to cross for Rangers was hooker Stuart Proctor, Frankland converted. Andrew Sagear doubled his tally for the game when he was first to pounce on a clever kick by Russ Young, Frankland converted. Shortly before half time full back Karl Frankland burst through and offloaded to the supporting Proctor, Frankland converted. Ranges lead 22 nil at the break.
Rangers continued the second half as they had finished the first, on top. Rangers knew one more try would really kill the game off. The returning Lee Buckley powered over from close range, Frankland converted. Wyke did not give in and were soon on the scoreboard when the winger collected a cross field kick and scored, conversion successful. Ross Young then darted through some woeful defence from acting half and Scott Bradley continued his scoring streak. Just as Rangers looked to be on the verge on notching 50 points, Wayne Jowett was adjudged to have dropped the ball over the line. With the players remonstrating the Wyke full back put down his carpets and decided to run the ball in for the first time in the game and went the length of the field to score in the last minute. Final score 12 – 44.
Best for Rangers were Wayne Jowett, Ross Young and Scott Bradley.
After the game Mark Horne said “what a great feeling to gain our number 1 goal of promotion. The best thing to happen to us was losing to Wyke in the cup, since then we have been on an impressive run both in terms of results and performances and competition for places for the 2 or 3 cup finals we have coming up is only good for the club.”
