Brighouse Town 5 Prescot Cables AFC 3
Evo-Stik NPL Division One
It was an eight goal thriller on Monday evening at the Dual Seal Stadium as Brighouse Town took on in form Prescot Cables.
A neck and neck game proceeded as each goal was replied to until Prescot took the lead just before half time.
Town manager Paul Quinn offered his words of wisdom at the break and they came out a different team and grabbed the three league points.
“We took our foot off the gas after a bright opening, and we said at half time that we have to keep the pressure on, and specially at home, we need to turn the screw, it wasn't acceptable.
“We started the second half like a house on fire and we could have scored more but we need to show consistency for 90 minutes but this has been an important win for us."
The opening ten minutes of the game was end-to-end, and a cross from Ernest Boafo that could have led to an opening goal went right across the face of goal but Daniel Facey missed the all important connection to latch on and score.
Prescot also were awarded two free kicks but they failed to captalise to the relief of Town.
In the fifteenth minute Town keeper Paul Hagreen kicked the ball down field, Steve Hollingworth and Prescot player Jonah O'Reilly chased the ball down but Hollingworth got to it first and rolled it past keeper Marcus Burgess to put Town ahead 1-0.
Town a minute later should have made it 2-0 when Ryan Hall burst through down the left and then proceeded to take the ball across the 18 yard box instead of a direct route and the chance was lost. Town's leftback Chris Fisher, who had provided the ball for Hall, was playing out of his skin and finding his colleagues with some deft through balls.
Prescot equalised in the 24th minute with Lloyd Dean supporting Rob Doran who walked the ball past Hagreen.
Prescot captain James McCulloch was booked in the 28th minute for a professional foul on Boafo.
The free kick was taken just before the half way line but Town were unable to capitalise as Burgess smothered the ball. In the 32nd minute Town's right back Ben Thornton was booked for shirt pulling.
Hagreen made a superb save in the 38th minute but from the fall out Doran put the ball into the sic yard box for Josh Nicholson to head home and put the visitors ahead 2-1.
Only 90 seconds into the second half and the hair dryer treatment from the gaffer had worked as Boafo burst down on goal from the right and from his wayward shot with the goal beckoning, Facey calmly coll3ected and levelled the scores at 2-2.
Town then scored their third goal in the 52nd minute, Adam Wilson found Facey who set up Hall to fo one-on-one with Burgess and fire the ball into the net.
The home side then brought on fresh legs with James Pollard replacing James Hurtley.
Five minutes later and Town looked set to score again with a cross from Hollingworth finding Hall's head but it just skimmed the crossbar.
Facey then took Town to 4-2 as he rolled the ball into the back of the net in the 61st minute.
Town made a silly mistake in the 66th minute with a wide open goal left for Doran and then Dean but fortunately the ball went over the crossbar from eight yards out.
Two minutes later and Prescot pulled it back 4-3 with James Hayes finding the impressive Doran to score.
Town were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute with Martin Allison being brought down in the box just as he was about to pull the trigger. Referee Gareth Rhodes had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Boafo stepped up to take the kick and put the homeside ahead at 5-3.
Boafo was then replaced by Isaac Baldwin.
Town continued to defend and, at the same time attack, and in the fourth minute of extra time there was a near miss from Hollingworth before Allison was booked for a professional foul, but the job was done!
