EVO-STIK NPL DIVISION ONE NORTH MATCH REPORT BY DAVE PARKER

TOWN huffed and puffed for another valuable point on their travels on a sloping surface they were clearly not used to. Two long range blistering shots from young guns Ben Atkinson and James Pollard went close, plus Luke Parkin missed a second half sitter on a day when Town clearly did not create enough chances for their strikeforce.
Manager Paul Quinn summed it up when said:''Another point in the right direction and we asked the players to be pragmatic with their reflections after the game. This group are not happy to draw games but we have to reflect and overall neither side did enough to win the game.
''We did not create many chances and both sides ultimately cancelled each other out. Overall I was pleased with the point and we now have a full week to prepare for the Ossett Albion game. We still feel we need to strengthen in a couple of areas and we have some discussions taking place this week so we will see what develops. His co-assistant coach Lee Ashforth also commented: ''Colne is a difficult place to go, both with the slope of the pitch and the calibre of player they have. It was important that we were solid defensively and a second away clean sheet was very pleasing.
''Although we did not create much going forward we have to be happy with a point away from home in a difficult league. We have stayed top of the league and extended our unbeaten league run, so overall we are happy with the performance.''
Colne had the best chance to open the scoring after six minutes when tall striker Ben Wharton saw his shot parried by Tom Taylor and Pollard clear to safety. Colne, playing down the slope on the old Colne Dynamoes pitch from the 90s, then saw Adam Morning head wide and Taylor once more denied Wharton.
On 17 minutes Atkinson unleashed his 25-yard volley after a Parkin cross which home keeper Tony Aghayere brilliantly tipped over. Six minutes later at the other end Town keeper Taylor showed bravery as he went down at the feet of Morning to deny him an open goal.
Sam Hewitt was a tower of strength in the Town defence with Alex Low and Pollard working well alongside him plus Adam Field and Greg Pearson grafting as wing-backs as the home side tried to take advantage of the slope. Tom Haigh, Ryan Watson and Atkinson were working hard in midfield but neither Parkin or Osborne were getting a service as the home side cut out vital passes or dispossessed players when things did look promising.
Playing down the hill in the second half and with no change or fortune, Quinn made his first change, bringing on striker Ruben Jerome for Haigh on 57 minutes. With still no goal eight minutes later he sacrificed centre defender Alex Low for the returning Callum Charlton.
Watson blasted over and then, after Bennett was fouled, Pollard's 25-yard free kick was blocked by the wall. Charlton found himself in referee Nathaniel Cox's notebook on 73 minutes before two minutes later Pollard went narrowly close with his tremendous shot.
Still with no breakthrough and three minutes later the manager brought on Daniel Bunch for Osborne. Colne, who had given the odd anxious moment to the Town defence and travelling supporters, then came really into their own and for ten minutes really put their visitor's defence under immense pressure.
Chris Anderson, Wharton went close, and then Ben Hoskin had the best chance of the game for Colne. It really did look curtains for Town in the 89th minute when Hoskin from just eight yards out in front of goal blasted over the crossbar.
No wonder Town had a five minute warm down under coach Dave Thompson before they came in for a shower, it had been sweaty palm time out there.
