Last gasp winner leaves Town frustrated

Brighouse played their part in what was a thrilling cup tie against Ashton United who last year made the final of the Premier Division play offs. Town had to ring the changes with Wilson, Matthews, Boafo, Allison, Naidole and Fisher all unavailable for selection due to injury. This made it an even more remarkable feat that Town pushed their visitors to within seconds of what would have been a Tuesday night replay. The changes included a debut for centre forward Barrie Frankland signed from Leeds City and a return to the club for full back Tom Brown.

Town took the lead after the hour mark through Ryan Hall. Ashton struck back on 75 minutes through Matthew Chadwick before Ashley Young scored an agonising injury time winner for the Premier Division outfit. Town management and players felt aggrieved with both goals as controversy surrounded the build up. Town can take immense satisfaction from what was an excellent cup tie but the disappointment was evident for all to see at the final whistle.

Manager Paul Quinn commented "the players are obviously gutted, I couldn't have asked anymore in terms of the performance, several players were out on their feet in the last few minutes. Ashton are a very good side but I felt we deserved at least a replay. We are making good progress and today only makes is more determined to push on. We feel really disappointed with the circumstances surrounding the goals particularly the second, but that's football, we wish Ashton every success."
