Regent Start With A Draw

Brightlingsea Regent started life in the Bostik Premier with a draw at Tooting & Mitcham

Brightlingsea Regent's players and supporters boarded the coach for their first trip in the Bostik Premier Division against fellow league newcomers Tooting & Mitcham.

Webster started with Josh Gould at left back and Boyland partnering Cripps at centre back. Ricky Griggs played right back whilst Hogan partnered Witherspoon in the middle. Condon and Kelly took up wide positions with Richardson heading the diamond in front of George Doyle.

The first twenty minute started with the host on the front foot coming close twice, first Tooting & Mitcham's striker had a snap shot wide. Then Tooting's winger Cunningham hit an effort straight at Cowler.

Regent did however become dangerous and made grounds into the game. The R's then took the lead, after 26 minutes. Richardson was failed on the wide right. The free kick was centred by Condon, and after the Tooting keeper parried the ball out, Richardson himself was there to head home! 0-1

The R's pushed for a second before the break, with 3 minutes to go. Aaron Condon hit a sweet 20 yard volley which looped up, and rattled the post! HT 0-1

The second half got underway, and just 3 minutes in. The host equalised. A sharp, upfield ball, got the Terrors in behind the Regent back four, with Ollie Bennett crossing for Billy Dunn, unmarked at the back post! 1-1

The match become stretched, with both sides creating chances at each end. Connor Witherspoon broke through with 20 minutes to go, from Midfield, creating space, with a shot reminiscent of Bobby Charlton! The Terrors keeper Kyle Merson, did well to parry out, falling to Phil Kelly, who was then denied by the post on his 250th appearance for the club!

The host Tooting & Mitcham forced a huge save From Sam Cowler with 10 minutes to go, Jake Baxter created space and hit a forceful effort on target.

Regent's last real effort fell to Richardson who got one on one with his defender, beating him and getting his shot away, but Merson saved well!

The match finished with a point-a-piece, which in the greater scheme of things. A fair result.

Regent host Leiston this Tuesday, looking to build on a good result on the opening day.
