Young R's Get First Win!
Brightlingsea Regent Under 21's secure first victory on Home Soil.
Brightlingsea Under 21s welcomed Thamesmead to North Road for their first home match of the season.
With Ade Webster away on holiday it was Sean Congram and Alan Wright managing the team.
Brightlingsea started well with McKenzie and Gilbert looking dangerous on the break and Smith and Taylor looking solid in defence.
Midway through the first half Brightlingsea were awarded a penalty after McKenzie was fouled in the box. Gilbert stepped up but his shot hit the base of the post and the resulting rebound went to safety.
Thamesmead continued to push forward but were frustrated by the resolute defence and the hard work of defensive midfielder Barnett.
The deadlock was finally broken early in the second half when McKenzie was again fouled in the box, this time by Mulgrew who received a yellow card.
McKenzie picked himself up and made no mistake from the spot. Thamesmead pushed for the equaliser but never really threatened the Brightlingsea goal.
Things did boil over in the 80 minute when Barnett was fouled from behind.
Although Mulgrew did win the ball he also went through the back of Barnett’s ankle. The ref showed the Thamesmead player a second yellow card for the tackle.
This allowed Brightlingsea to counter attack and they quickly scored a second as Gilbert was sent clear and he calmly slotted under the keeper.
The victory was sealed when Barnett was sent clear down the right, his initial shot was well saved but he followed up the rebound and found the bottom corner.
A good win for the 21s with their first points on the board. Next up its AFC Sudbury away on Friday evening 7.45pm kick off
