Brighton dig deep and beat Midhurst in Surrey thriller

The Club minibus was used to transport the U15 group to Haslemere (Midhurst play in Surrey as they have amalgamated their U15 side with Haslemere) for an 1100 KO. As always with an amalgamated team you get the best of both and “Midmere” were a strong side, well organised and committed.

After an even start with some committed tackling by both teams, the home team scored first after some good interplay.

Blues stuck to the task and three unanswered Blues tries came in quick succession….

….after some good rucking by the forwards and good hands from the backs Jamie went over the line, converted by Olly (7-7)…..

…..another try after good set up play and a succession of pick and go’s put the ever present Joey over. Score 7-12…..

….as the first half clock ticked away, Blues were awarded a scrum on the 10m line centre field. Well hooked by Bailey and sharp drive by the power house front five produced a well-executed back row move down the right hand side for Noah J, playing at No 8, to deliver an off load to Joey who went over, hardly opposed, to make the score 7-17.

Half time – game on

Whilst the game had been even up front in the first half, the front row of Frankie, Bailey & Dylan started to get on top of the opposition with several against the head wins, setting a pattern of repeated scrums with our engine room 2nd rows of Joey and Sam having a very good day at the office. A good display from Olly, who although not his usual 100% with the boot, shocked opposition No 8 by smashing him back on his seat several times during the match.

Midhurst started to exert pressure and an unforced knock-on had alarm bells ringing as poor defensive line speed allowed the Midhurst 13 to produce a mazy run to go over under the posts to score a try that was converted. Score 14-17.

Fresh legs added by Ellis, Ben and Seb boosted the Blues to pick it up and they changed up a gear. The driving maul provided good ball for Lucas playing well at scrum-half and ultimately into the hands of the outstanding Andy Reed. As the ball started to move well in the back line and our wingers becoming more involved in the game, Midhurst could not cope with the movement combined with the pressure from the pack and started to give away penalties. A penalty kick to the corner saw a pushover try from the lineout, commanded by the in-form Wye. Conversion by Olly Score 14-24

Another poor receipt from the kick off did not dampen Blues resolve and with Sebastian later forcing a turn over, the ball was moved side to side eventually breaking down for a scrum to Midhurst. A strike against the head allowed Noah to drive down the left for quick ruck ball, neatly arriving in the hands of the unstoppable Reed to score the Blues final try in what proved to be the final score of the game. Final Score: 14-29

This game had the potential to be a banana skin, a 90 min drive into deepest Surrey, playing a very well-motivated opposition. The Blues showed guts, character and toughness.

A good team effort and although Andy was a deserved man of the match, special mention also goes to the Pack and especially the unstoppable Joey Crouch who took all his 3 tries very very well.

Hope to see as many lads as possible Wednesday, it been a great start to the season for the whole squad in both leagues, we should celebrate.
