Last ball drama as Jake takes bragging rights.

When planning these club evenings, one is always a little apprehensive whether we’ll have enough numbers, I shouldn’t have worried as we had 26 players keen to take part in the friendly 20/20. Cheered on by an audience of approaching 20 making it the best attended Crescent event in many a year.

In fact, that only notable absence was Mr Crescent himself (Simon Wood) There are several theories floating around as to who may have poisoned Simon to take him out of action for tour. Perhaps Ledbury heard about the 950 odd club wickets, I suspect it more likely to be an inside job in an attempt to avoid a 90-minute speech at Aston Inning this coming Thursday. Either way it seems the dose wasn’t high enough to stop Woody touring for the 80th time.

Jake and Max where in charge of proceedings, with Jake winning the toss and fielding. There were various cameos from the batting team; Harry, Max, Andy and Joe to name a few. Max risked the wrath of Ruth by hitting the bonnet of her Golf, then almost smashing the pavilion window.

The highlight of the innings was debut runs for Raj’s daughter Shona and Harry’s girlfriend Molly along with a debut wicket for Eloise. At the
end of an eventful 20 overs the score had reached a competitive 144.

After a quick turnaround Max deployed his key bowler Alan as the chase began well with 21 taken off the first 3 overs. Things rather slowed down for the next few overs due to some terrific fielding by the youngsters, Worthy of a note was a brilliant catch from Shona to remove Rich, and not forgetting Molly bowling Jake for a golden duck.

Thankfully a bit of slogging from Matt, Karan and Martin and a few kind choices of bowlers from Max set it up to leave 25 needed of the last 3 overs. From that point Rob and Eloise keep up with the rate, Rob dispatching Max for a maximum off the penultimate over to leave 9 needed of the final over. Back came Alan to try and seal victory however it was Rob who held his nerve hitting the last ball to the boundary to seal the win.

In truth the result didn’t matter, the fact that we had close to 50 people at Horsdean enjoying the game and staying late into the evening afterwards meant the event was a great success. Many thanks for all that attended, in particular the umpires, scorer and club guests who helped make the game a lot of fun.

I look forward to the next club event.
