Charlbury Town Res 1-0 Brize Norton
Brize lose to a controversial penalty
2 games down, 2 home wins. Brize Norton were looking to take their fantastic home form away to Charlbury Reserves who themselves were unbeaten having won last Saturday 6-1 vs Witney Wanderers. This was the 2nd time Brize were up against Charlbury, after the pre season friendly earlier where Charbury won 6-2.
Rob Hook had a selection headache before kick off, a number of key players missing including the whole of last weeks back line. So he had to ditch the so far successful 3-5-2 formation and switch to a 4-1-3-2 to try and tighten the game in the middle of the park, Brize lined up like this;
GK Steve Marshall
RB Scott Bamford
CB Rob Hook
CB Dan Humm
LB Ciaran Clarke
DM John Oswald
RCM Toby Goodwin
CM Jon White (C)
LCM Gezz Morgan
ST Adam Davis
ST Haydn Parker
SUBS Shaun Rawlings, Richard Duffy, Matt Parsloe
Brize won the toss and had the kick off, they were looking to continue their dominance in midfield, but unlike recent weeks the opposition were stronger and they themselves were looking to dominate the midfield. A very scrappy first 20 minutes with all the action in the middle of the park, not a lot in the way of goal scoring opportunities until Hayden Parker got through on goal with only the goalie to beat, great save by the Charlbury goalkeeper's feet to deny him, this led to a few more chances, Adam Davis had the beating of the defence and instead of pulling the trigger and testing the keeper he decided to try and square to Haydn but was defended easily.
A very competitive game, the referee was getting ear ache from the constant moaning from the Charlbury players, fans and manager. Numerous fouls for late miss timed tackles, one of which led to Brize Nortons best opportunity, a freekick given for a foul on Haydn Parker just outside the box in a great position. This led to a Manager vs Captain battle on who takes it. Eventually the decision was made, and it was captain Jon White who got the nod... only for him to hit it well over. Rob Hook was adamant he was having the next one.
Brize almost took the lead just before half time with Jon White whipping in a freekick (another foul from Charlbury) from the side of the penalty box to find John Oswald who glanced his header off the post.
First half 0-0 with Brize the better team.
2nd half was a different story, Charlbury tweaked a few things at half time and came out a different team, finding lots of space in the channels, and pushing their wingers up higher. This led to the Charlbury winger Ryan Healing getting on the ball and running at Gezz Morgan in the penalty box, with no touch from Gezz, Ryan took it upon himself to do his very best impression of Tom Daley. Penalty! Much to the annoyance of the whole Brize Norton team. Charlbury had the chance to go ahead with a penalty, Jack Mahony sent Steve Marshall the wrong way and smashed in a great penalty.
It took a while for Brize to get their composure back after being riled by that decision. Rob Hook looked to freshen things up and bring on the 3 players who were making the first appearances of the season. The pacey Richard Duffy, comedy Shaun Rawlings and all action Matt Parsloe coming on for Adam Davis, Toby Goodwin & Gezz Morgan.
Didn't take long before Matt Parsloe got in on the action, some good play in the middle and getting his shot away, looking destined for the bottom corner, great save by Keeper. This time its was Rob Hook's turn, after losing out to Jon White in the first half to take a freekick, he took control this time only for his to be as bad as Jon's.
Into the last 5 minutes it was all Brize Norton, corner to Brize led to Steve Marshall coming forward. Corner by Jon White found the head of the Peter Schmeichel esc Steve Marshall, great header but Charlbury had 3 defenders on the line and was cleared.
That turned out to be the last action of this very competitive game, a draw would of been a fair result. Charlbury is a tough place to go, always well supported.
MOM was given to full back Scott Bamford, for his solid display and a superb defensive diving header, offered a lot going forward and with nothing getting past defensively.
Brize Norton will be looking to continue their 100% home record next week against top of the table Bourton...
