Bad Day at the Office
Brize Reserves left searching for first point of the season
Brize Norton Res fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to Milton Res this weekend. Following on from an encouraging comeback in the last 20 minutes at home to Wootton Res a week ago, manager Mark Carpenter was hoping they could carry that into this week. There were 3 changes to the team that lost to Wootton with Jamie Stubbs, David Anstee and Ciaran Clarke all making way for various reasons to new signing Martin Edwards, Daniel Simon and Chris Mayhew.
The game started very scrapily with neither team playing particularly brilliant football, Milton had the best of the opening stages with them attacking particularly well down the left flank of the Brize team. After several missed opportunities, it wasn't long before Milton were ahead, this was swiftly followed in the second half by another sucker blow to Brize, who had struggled to impose themselves on the home team.
HT Milton 2 - 0 Brize
After a half time team talk of some home truths from the manager, Brize started the second half in a higher gear than they had found themselves for the whole of the first half, they had started to play some simple football and looked more of a team unit, then came the goal, the total opposite of total football, a long drive up field from a Steven Towle goal kick, a mis-control from playmaker Jason Hirshfield which dropped over the top of the Milton defence for Dan Thomas to run onto and side foot into the net, with the keeper diving the wrong way... Brize were back in it, or so it seemed. After this, another 10 minutes of end to end play endured, Brize having a few chances on goal, only for Dan Thomas to see his shots go over the bar. Milton then started to bring the game to Brize once more and before long, it was 3 - 1 to Milton, a very dubious penalty, the Milton player diving onto the ground like he'd tripped over a 6ft wall, the resulting penalty was duly converted, a fourth goal followed from their big striker, out muscling the Brize defence and riffling into the net to leave a dejected Brize team, the game was over as a contest.
A disappointing day for the Reserves who looked some comfortable on the ball in pre-season. Back to basics next week for the game against Spartan... points are certainly needed.
