Broadbridge Heath 2-0 Hassocks
Heath secured their place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division next season with a 2-0 win over Hassocks at the Leisure Centre on Saturday.
The Bears started well with Javlon Campbell going close after 3 minutes with a dipping shot from 30 yards that the Hassocks goalkeeper Nathan Strongberg did well to hold on to. Strongberg was in the right place again minutes later when Gicu Iordache’s right foot free kick from 25 yards flew straight into his arms. With 15 minutes played a George Cousins corner from the left was headed over the bar by Stuart Chester at the far post and on 30 minutes Strongberg made the best save of the match diving low to his left to push the ball from Iordache’s right foot shot against the post to safety.
Minutes later Heath were almost punished for those missed chances when the visitor’s Bradley Bant shot took a deflection off Martyn Flack and went narrowly wide of Michael Chester’s left post.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first, within the opening minute a long Flack throw-in from the right into the penalty area saw the ball cleared as far as Fender who rifled it through a crowd of players straight to Strongberg on the goal-line.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 50th minute when a Flack cross from the right was collected by Iordache at the far post, he dribbled it around a couple of defenders before firing a right foot shot low into the bottom left corner. Chances continued to come Heaths way, Fender struck a right foot volley over the bar from inside the penalty area, Iordache had a goal bound effort deflected off the keeper and wide of the post and Alex Parsons powered a header from a George Cousins corner over the crossbar, at the other end George Galbraithe-Gibbons twice tried his luck with shots from distance that went straight to Michael Chester.
Having played so well for his team it was ironic that Heath’s second goal came from a mistake by the Hassocks keeper when his attempted clearance went straight to Iordache who immediately played a through to Fender who went on to score his 23rd goal of the season and the first since returning from four months out through injury.
Heath have two games remaining starting with a home derby against Horsham YMCA on Tuesday night and ending with an away trip to AFC Uckfield on Saturday.
