Broad Plain RFC receives President's XV Award

The RFU President's XV Recognition Awards 2012 panel has selected Broad Plain RFC as runner up in the Schools Development category!

This is a prestigious national award that confirms Broad Plain RFC's intent to engage with all local schools, both to promote rugby, and to offer facilities to inner-city schools with little or no green space.

The South West RFU has also announced that Broad Plain RFC is the overall winner in its Schools Development category for 2012!

The Club is keen to engage with the community, especially through local schools, some of which use the Club's grounds for sports events on a regular basis. The Tag teams are made up of year 2 and 3 kids, and we also offer training to reception and year 1 ages (although they can't play competitive games until after their 6th birthday). We have players from most of the primary schools in Bedminster, Ashton, Southville and Totterdown, and are now looking to create links with the primary schools in the Bishopsworth, Withywood, Hartcliffe and Knowle areas.

In-Reach Rugby Coaching

We can provide in-reach rugby coaching to local schools and are always looking to provide more, so contact us if you are interested.

Recruitment Display

We have taken the display shown in the picture to several school Summer Fairs and Christmas Fairs, and generated a lot of interest, so if you'd like us to come along to your Fair or other event, give us a shout. We can man it for a couple of hours and chat to parents and kids, answer questions etc, or we can leave it as a static display in your school for a week or two.

Tag Rugby Festivals

In Autumn, at the beginning of the season, the Club organises a schools Tag Rugby Festival for primary age kids, with up to eight schools invited, which provides a great competiton for schools who already run tag teams (you know who you are!), and also allows kids to turn up and 'have a go'. In springtime we also host schools cluster tag finals, including the south Bristol schools finals, which allows for a few scores to be settled from the earlier tournament!

Encouraging Tag Rugby in Schools

Many of our local schools already run tag rugby teams at year 3/4, or 5/6, level, or both. Several other schools are looking to introduce the game, and create their own teams, and Broad Plain can help to do this. The Club is currently engaging with a number of local schools, to produce a 'package' including coaching training for teachers, in-reach training, and Tag Rugby Assemblies, to generate further interest in the school. The recruitment display and publicity materials can be added to this. Broad Plain training can complement school squads, as we train kids in reception and years 1/2, so if the kids come to us when they are young, they will be fully-fledged players by the time they are ready to turn out for their schools!

Coaching Courses for Teachers

The Club occasionally hosts RFU Tag Rugby Coaching courses, which are ideal for sports teachers looking to start up a tag team. The courses are normally half a day and cost around £20, and provide plenty of ideas for drills and exercises. Contact us if you are interested; in the meantime click on 'Club Info\Coaching Resources' for some good drills and other coaching ideas.

Healthy Schools Agenda

Forming links with, and promoting, local sports clubs, helps to tick a few boxes on the schools' Healthy Schools' agenda (criterion 3.4 - Extra Curricular Activities). If you'd like to promote Broad Plain RFC in your school, we're very keen to help! Please download and print off the attached documents - one is a poster, the other is an information handout which you may want to attach to your school newsletter, or add to your website.

Better still, why not add a link to this website to your school's own website?
