Brockenhurst falls short after having too many to chase

This week saw Brockenhurst 1st XI host Hythe & Dibden III at Balmer Lawn. The pitch was a green top but hard underneath due to the impressive sunny weather we have had recently. This prompted the away skipper to bat first after winning the toss.

Jariwala and Jarvis opened the bowling. Jariwala got the early scalp of a wide half tracker that ended up directly in the hands of debutant Wythe at point. The bowlers take all the wickets they can get! Jariwala was wayward afterwards with bowling a mixed bag.

Anderson replaced Jariwala whilst Jarvis continued bowling to finish his full quota of overs. Ending with impressive figures of 8 overs for 19 runs with a maiden and a wicket. Jarvis got the other opener out for 26.

Harry Greenwood and Taylor then replaced Anderson and Jarvis respectively. Both bowled well without getting wickets. Taylor in particular, ending with figures of 8 overs for 26 runs with two maidens.

Their number three and four (Mills and O’Connor) formed a formidable partnership of 153 runs. Mills scoring an outstanding 111 whilst O’Connor falling short of a half century by 1 run. The away team were able to score quickly as Brockenhurst were unable to use a fast bowler to end their bowling innings. Rogers’ leg spin was used to bowl at the death alongside skipper Jariwala instead. Hythe & Dibden scored 100 runs from their last ten overs. Their total score was 211/2 in the allocated 40 overs.

Brockenhurst’s batting started well with Jarvis and Cole scoring quickly, until Jarvis’ untimely departure for 17 in the 6th over. Williams joined Cole in the middle and together they put a partnership of 70 which included 7 boundaries. Brockenhurst were 108/2 in the 25th over. Hythe & Dibden at the same stage were 87/2. Brockenhurst ahead of the game. The wicket of Williams for 29 was followed quickly with the wicket of Wythe. This brought Martin to the crease. Cole (Balmer Lawn Man of the Match for this game) got out next for a well scored 42 with 5 boundaries. Three wickets in quick succession meant Brockenhurst started to get a little behind the scoring rate. Next in was the skipper, Jariwala. Brockenhurst required 102 from 12 overs.

Jariwala and Martin put on a well-constructed partnership of 49 in 6.3 overs, both hitting boundaries but unable to rotate the strike regularly. Martin then got out trying to accelerate, score at 157/4 in the 35th over. The next four wickets fell in a heap; Brockenhurst finishing on 176/9 in 39 overs. Hythe & Dibden winning by 35 runs.
A few distractions in this game but the team’s morale is still on a high. The death bowling by Brockenhurst needs to improve in order to not let oppositions get away. The score sheet is attached below. Please have a look. Next game is against Fawley II away on Saturday 26th May.
