Resilient Badgers bounce back twice to take the home derby win

Brocton 3 Heath Hayes 2 - A Douglas double sinks Heath Hayes as the Badgers dig deep for the win

Saturday 27th August 2018
Brocton 3 Heath Hayes 2

A frenetic start signalled what was to come from these two teams as each side chased lost causes and fought for loose balls all over the pitch. A pattern began to emerge and the home side had the better of the build up play, only to find that illusive final touch for a goal hard to find. That was illustrated perfectly when Jack Weldon, full of hope and athleticism, chased for a ball which seemed destined to be fifty –fifty with Heath Hayes’ keeper. They both met it and it ballooned up. The keeper was the quicker to reach the loose ball.
.On twenty minutes, Mark Kimmins had a shot blocked and the ball squirmed out to Jamie Weldon, whose hard, low cross was met by Jethro Jarrett, only to see visiting keeper Tom Burns equal to the effort.
With Brocton seemingly in the ascendancy, they were soon caught, with Dean Williams driving at the heart of the home defence and somehow Sam Kayode failed to get a shot away when a goal seemed inevitable.
Hayes were soon encouraged though as James Moore raided from the back and his shot was turned on by Andrew Davies. A deflection took it past Connor McCarthy. The score was harsh on Brocton at that point but it clearly raised the spirits of the visitors and Brocton were pushed back.
There was still time though for the home side to mount two good attacks with Josh Wilson firing over the bar and then Jarrett to fire wide.
Burns produced a great close range save early in the second half and reprised his heroics with two fine stops in quick succession, earning himself a clattering and a break in play while he recovered.
However, he had to dive back to try to retrieve the ball as it squirmed away from him and conceded a contentious corner, the validity of which divided both home and away supporters. The corner, almost inevitably, led to Brocton drawing level, with Jamie Weldon getting the vital header.
Brocton’s spirits were lifted, but Heath Hayes felt hard done by and it was the visitors whose extra effort paid dividends as a corner was wept home by Sam Kayode, to give them back their slender lead.
Brocton’s tails were up by now though and Ben Douglas powered a header in from a Josh Wilson free kick before Jarrett’s over head kick in the box was thwarted by a good Burns save.
The decider though was due to too much adrenaline as Ben Douglas was fouled in the box, before taking the resulting penalty himself and securing the three points.

Brocton: Connor McCarthy, Adam Weldon, Jamie Weldon, Alex Scott, Ben Douglas, Kenny Devoir, Matt Kimmins, Joe Geldart, Jethro Jarrett, Josh Wilson, Jack Weldon.

Used substitutes: Ryan Kimberley. Nathaniel Lewars, Cameron Jackson.
