With the Badgers only able to field 3 substitutes and Paget coming into game on the back of a 6-2 win on Saturday, the omens seemed to point towards a difficult night for Brocton in the JW Hunt Cup Round 1. However, within the first 5 minutes, it became very clear, it was Paget who were in for a torrid time. Before anyone had time to get to their regular spot, Jack Arrowsmith scored his first goal for the club with a firm close header past Dowling in the Paget goal. A sign of things to come, Paget struggled to cope with the Badger set pieces all night and on 3 minutes, the lead doubled as Adam Wood, returning to the team, stooped to head home from a cross on the right. Lewars really should have stretched the lead to three on 18 as passed the keeper at close range and the goal at his mercy, blasted the ball just over. Paget by this time were getting animated about decisions and the first to leave the game was the Paget Manager following a heated debate with the referee. However, it wasn’t the last sending off as Byrne pushed Kimmins in the face and suddenly Paget were down to 10 and losing 2-0. Woody, now with a taste of goal, wasn’t settling for just one goal and managed to hit the post with a header before grabbing his brace. A Kimmins floated ball to the back post saw Woody stoop the lowest and header past Dowling for 3 nil at the break.
Paget started the second half the brighter side, with no visible signs of the missing player. Pushing forward, Paget tried to make McCarthy work, but the Brocton stopper was more than up to the task and kept his clean sheet. With Scott marshalling the back four and Lewars with McGrady making the Paget back line work, a further goal seemed inevitable against the 10 men and on 73 minutes it arrived. Adam Weldon burst onto the right wing from right back and crossed an inch perfect pass into McGrady’s run. McGrady took one touch to get the ball under control on the run then calmly slotted it under the advancing Dowling to end any Paget hopes of a come back. To Paget’s credit, they never gave in and kept going and Powell missed the chance of the evening for visitors with a header over the bar from 3 yards. Just summed up the visitors evening. There was still enough time for Woody to try and claim his hat trick by hitting the post with a header again, but he did deserve his Man of The Match award. With virtually the last kick of the game, Paget managed a consolation goal as sub Connolly finished under the advancing McCarthy for 4-1. In effect an easy night for Brocton who will try to take this form into the league match on Saturday vs Chelmsley Town.
